While browsing through the Yuletide fics I found Dominic and Submission, a The Fast and the Furious BDSM AU, and that made me start to watch the movies. Fast cars and some explosions, perfect for an evening distraction.

I enjoyed "The Fast and the Furious" a lot. My view was probably a bit influenced by just having read a d/s AU, but then lines like "he owns you now" and their looks at each other are definitely canon, so I'm not sure how much of a difference it made. It has action scenes, conflicting loyalties and betrayal, a chaotic crew/family with many different characters and the outsider finding his way in, and a great open ending.

"2 Fast 2 Furious": I must have seen this before ages ago, I remembered the purple and yellow cars. This was a lot of fun. I didn't even miss Dom very much, Rome was great too and how he and Brian were trying to get back to what they once had. I also really liked Monica. (Verone, though, ugh. The rat torture is just cruel, and that cop, who still did his actual job, is the secret hero of the movie.) Jimmy, Tej, and Suki are a great supporting cast, the scenery is beautiful, and the racing scenes are entertaining. And the ending is optimistic :)

I skipped "Tokyo Drift" because I read that it had completely different characters and I wanted to follow these.

"Fast & Furious": I was disappointed by the set-up. Why the heck is Brian with the FBI now? What happened with his garage with Rome? (Also, what happened to his haircut.) And Dom is still doing the same thing that almost got Vince killed? It's not what I wanted.
Some of the Dom-Brian scenes were entertaining, and so where some of the races, but the overall feel of the movie was different than in the first two. More serious, more action-thriller-y, and that started with the fridging of Letty.

"Fast Five": I don't think they have an idea of what they're doing with Dom anymore, they just have a few fixed points and stick him wherever and however he fits. I barely even like him anymore. Almost the same with Brian. Mia was little more than just there. And why are Tej and Rome suddenly here? What happened after 2F2F, and didn't they know what they were risking? I wasn't interested in Elena for long. The bad guy wasn't that interesting. So much collateral damage that it made me wince and enjoy the action scenes a lot less.
It still had some nice moments, but overall I didn't really like it.

I'm not even sure if I want to watch the sixth one.

I've already started reading fic and I'll probably try a few more before I get bored, and vids. Atm I'm leaning towards post-2F2F fic, I'll see what's out there.

Oooh, we loved 6! Albeit we're not watching for deep characterization, but for Awesome Popcorn Action and for (very important, this!) an action franchise that has a whole slew of people of color as well as women doing all sorts of awesome action things together. It's just such a relief to watch a film and not sort of rouse halfway through from the action stupor and go "Wait a minute - I don't think any female character has DONE anything yet!" or "Why is everyone in America white now?". I totally adore the whole F&F franchise for how inclusive it is.

Oh and you should watch 3 because there is one character from 4, 5 & 6 in it (it falls after 6 in the in-universe timeline) and also it has lots of great shots of Tokyo. (I am biased). Plus now it will tie in with 7! It's not exactly straight forward, but they've managed to tie the plots together fairly well. It's not a fantastic movie, but it's kind of fun, and also directed by someone who didn't turn Tokyo into the Exotic Oriental East.

I am on a F&F kick right now because we only just watched 6 for the first time last week and have been talking to everyone about how much we loved it. :D Of course, we also do love Dwayne Johnson and having him and Vin Diesel in the same film is cause for much squee and celebration. We're easy like that. (But seriously - they added another major character who is a person of color! How cool is that?)

Trying not to think about 7 and how sad Paul Walker's death is because... it is deeply, deeply tragic. I'm glad I had a chance to mourn him together with my friends - it's weird because we only knew him from these films, as this character, but we've read about him and the family he left behind and... I guess it doesn't have to be weird to grieve for someone you know leaves a huge hole in their loved ones' lives with their passing?

Anyway, that's all my opinion - if you're into the movies because of a fic pairing and didn't like five, don't get your hopes up for 6 maybe? (I loved it because of in-movie reasons and anime-level gravity-defying stunts.) But if you do have time to spare, watch 6 and then 3 because that is suddenly the order that makes the most sense. XD
