Babylon 5 1x15-1x18
Oct. 4th, 2014 01:08 pmYesterday I actually got some work done on my thesis! It felt great. Let's see if I can repeat that today.
Yesterday evening/night I met with LK and AV again (MM was also there for a while) to watch things: first one of the many movie classics LK is shocked I don't know, then Bab5.
A Few Good Men: I didn't like Kaffee when he was first presented as a disrespectful slacker, and that was cemented when he decided to harrass Galloway, a superior officer, at their first meeting. Rich white boy who thinks he can get away with everything because he always has. And Galloway wasn't even fazed because it must happen to her all the time (Jessup's comments to her, wow.) But despite not caring for Kaffee (quote during the movie: "I don't like him, but people being competent is hot") I enjoyed the movie as a whole.
"TKO" was surprisingly "domestic" after the previous exercises. I didn't much care for the mutai (?) plot: human wants to use alien tradition sacred to them to further his own career, magically turns out to be equal or better than their champion, yay... But I enjoyed Susan sitting shiva for her father. (A Russian Jewish female character in space, how awesome is that?) I also liked that even though the Rabbi and Sinclair made strong recommendations, it was ultimately her decision to do it. How much do I love Susan Ivanova, a lot.
And we got confirmation that Sakai still visits Sinclair :)
In "Grail" we finally find out more details about the fates of the other Babylon stations: 1-3 were sabotaged, not only accidents. And I thought 4 might have e.g. blown up while communications were out, but it disappeared basically in plain sight, with "wrinkles." Sounds like a cloaking device or something like that - and the only cloaking device we've seen so far iirc was the shadow tentacle ship's... (LK loved hearing AV and my theories and told us to write them down for later, I'm sure it'll be fun to look back.)
We also saw an ombudsman for everyday trials, good to know. ("His grandfather kidnapped and probed my grandfather!" Heh.)
And mindwiping tentacles in a Vorlon suit (very likely a fake one.) Khosh likes it that people are worried of him, okay.
I doubt we'll see Thomas the Seeker again, but who knows.
"Eyes" was a bit puzzling, because if ben Zayn and Grey were sent to sabotage Sinclair (and his staff) by his enemies, why not send more competent/stable people? Oh well. (Btw, I wonder how the Minbari would react to Sinclair being replaced, they wanted him specifically for some reason...)
Sinclair using regulations to wriggle out of stuff is always fun. Poor Susan and her fear (and anger, but I'm pretty sure it's rooted in fear, ouch what a nightmare) of the Psi-Corps - though I doubt she thought it all the way through when it comes to individual Psi-Corps members, because if prison is bad and drugs are bad, it's not hard to see why an Earth-born telepath would be a member of Psi-Corps and feel like they don't have a choice.
It was also a bit strange to watch after "A Few Good Men", where it was the bad guy who went "I fought a war, I don't have to pay attention to your rules," and here it was Sinclair who says "I fought on the Line, I shouldn't have to do what you say." But Sinclair is still willing to follow the rules even when he thinks he shouldn't have to.
Garibaldi and Lennier becoming friends and building/driving a motorcycle together :)
And immediately more Psi-Corps in "Legacies"! I liked it, it was a good view on what options there are for untrained Earth-born telepaths, and the little girl got a choice. And it also shows very well why untrained and more importantly unethical telepaths are dangerous. I can understand Sinclair's curiosity, but he still asked Elisa for information she got out of Delenn's head during an illegal and unethical scan.
Minbari politics! Their caste system is interesting, no wonder there is much internal conflict. Delenn first plays diplomat, but when it counts she's suddenly Satai "You will obey me or your clan will be wiped out" Delenn.
Sinclair is becoming a pretty good diplomat and man of peace himself :)
Ugh, I just wanted to look up how to spell something and find an icon and accidentally stumbled upon spoilers :( Stupid. I hate having to search for icons, I find it hard to find what I want. I should probably have a generic space one to cover everything with spaceships.
I almost know the whole intro by now! A few more episodes, i.e. one more evening, to finish season 1. (LK tried to persuade me to do it all in one go, but it was already 3:30am...) I hope we'll find some time soon.
