DD and I finished season one of The 100, and it was great. We had enough self-control not to start season 2 immediately, so we decided to watch it this weekend. I'm looking forward to it!
Things I like about season 1: the characters, characters being put in complicated situations, and how that makes them interact with each other.
My current favorite is Finn. I was annoyed by him when he was just lying around injured and the reason for tension between Raven and Clarke, but as soon as he was up again he reminded me why I like him so much. He's smart! He doesn't like violence, so he looks for alternative solutions. Despite the fact that Lincoln hurt him and almost let him die, and the fact that the 100 tortured Lincoln, he manages to get Lincoln to set up a meeting for peace talks. (Which Jasper ruins, screw you Jasper.) He comes up with the plan to blow up the bridge to give them time, and he leads the Reapers to the camp, both of which buy the 100 the time they need to survive. Finn stands up to anyone who advocates violence, especially Bellamy, but that doesn't mean he's a pacifist, and he's definitely not a coward. I really like his viewpoint especially as a contrast to the others, and his creative ideas.
By now I'm also good with the love triangle thing. He didn't handle it in an ideal fashion, but his actions were understandable. I can understand why Raven breaks up with him, but I think she's wrong when she says Finn loves Clarke more than her; just in a different way, maybe. It's easy to read Finn as poly and Raven is clearly not, but even if he's not, feelings are sometimes messy like that. I like that Clarke rejects him though, and I really hope we get to see them be good friends. They're close and they rely on each other – when Anya threatened to kill Finn if Clarke failed to save Tris, and then Tris died, ouch.
I constantly worried that Finn was going to die. On the one hand his perspective is currently very valuable to the narrative, but they could try and make Octavia fill that role and then he'd be expendable. (She doesn't fit it quite yet but she could.) DD told me that he probably won't die soon because he's a main character, but a) that doesn't necessarily mean much, and b) he's a supporting main character, he's not as central as Clarke or Bellamy and therefore he's at risk. We don't even have confirmation that he survived the season finale, he was outside when they set the fuel on fire – he ran out to save Bellamy, and Bellamy also didn't make it back to the drop ship, so it's likely that they're both alive. I hope so.
I'm not a big fan of Anya. Sure, she's right when she tells Clarke that the hostilities are not solely the Grounders' fault, but the specific examples she chooses are stupid. The reason why the 100 sent raiders who then captured Lincoln was because Lincoln kidnapped Octavia, and the reason why Tris got hurt when Raven blew up the bridge was because Tris was part of an army that was coming to wipe out the camp. What did Anya expect?
Octavia/Lincoln moved a bit too fast for me. We don't know exactly how much time there is between Octavia freeing Lincoln and when we see them have sex – I know little about healing wounds but from how Finn's looks I'd say, idk, maybe two weeks or so. The fact that Lincoln originally kidnapped Octavia and chained or to a rock in a cave is never addressed again. I do like that he later comes to the realization that what his people are planning to do is wrong, but it seems very convenient and plot-driven.
I was surprised that Diana died so soon, I was expecting that plotline to last longer. I also didn't expect her to be so ruthless and almost kill the whole Arc just to escape with one ship. That was an interesting twist! So of the whole Arc, one station full of people survived? That's most likely less than a hundred people. They also have very limited supplies. This is going to be interesting. I'm glad Abby survived, and I like Marcus more and more, though they put it on a bit thick in making him a hero.
The dynamic between Clarke and Bellamy is still very interesting. I liked that Bellamy felt so guilty about causing so many deaths –he should be – and that Clarke felt it hard to forgive her mom, but that she was immediately willing to forgive Bellamy becauseshe wasn't as personally affected she needs him. She also told the Chancellor that Bellamy was indispensable. And not even only because of how he organizes people, also because she needs to feel like she has someone to share the burden with, otherwise she wouldn't be able to bear the pressure. Poor Clarke, doing the best she can in a pretty bad situation, but she's strong. People trust her, which gives her people to support her when she needs them. I really hope we get to see more of her with Raven next season, I liked what we saw so far.
With Bellamy, I like to see him on screen and I can recognize that he's an interesting character, but for some reason he just doesn't grab me as much. Hopefully that will change.
I don't like Jasper very much. I do like that we get to see some of the 100 (best name I know for them even though they're a lot less than a hundred now) who are not part of the inner circle – DD wondered why not more people want to have more of a say in making decisions, I think it's a combination of not knowing how to assert themselves in the right way and not wanting to have to make the hard decisions. I wouldn't be sorry if Jasper died, but I am glad that Monty survived.
There are different groups of Grounders! The warrior group that Anya is a part of – they fight in many battles, battles against who? Other groups of their kind? - , the Reapers who are cannibals who experiment on humans, and the mysterious mountain men who have advanced technology. (Who shot Jasper outside Mount Weather? The mountain men apparently don't use spears, but why would someone else shoot him for coming near the mountain? I guess we'll find out.)
