schneefink: (FF Kaylee excited)

New York is amazing. I’m having a great time so far. The weather is great, the sights are impressive, and the people are so friendly! It started with the customs officer, cab driver, and doorman on my first evening here; today I asked a woman for directions on the subway and she ended up giving me a free ticket for a gallery where she works because she said I absolutely have to go see it. I will – I’m so glad I decided to stay in NYC longer because there are so many things to see. So far I’ve been to the Met (my favorite part was the American wing, the windows and glass works there etc.), the MoMa (mostly the Degas exhibition, very interesting), and the Intrepid (an actual air craft carrier and they did a good job painting life on board, with bonus space shuttle); and Times Square and the High Line. I also had poutine, it was very good. Linda, my grandfathers’s cousin who I’m staying with, is very nice and a great host.

I have musical tickets (She Loves Me) for Saturday, and Islanders-Panthers playoff tickets for Wednesday! I’m already excited.

Oh awesome! If you find yourself down that way, I highly recommend Strand Books (Broadway and 12th) and Veselka Cafe (2nd Ave. and 9th Street). Veselka is a Ukrainian diner and it's open 24 hours a day! Their pierogi and blini are the BEST.

This Canadian is skeptical of New York poutine. ;)

I'm glad you're having such a good time!

!!! That sounds amazing! I'm glad you're having a good time. The theater thing sounds very interesting as well! Also I forgot how cheap Islanders games still are, I was momentarily confused how you had got tickets. \o/ Hope you continue to have a great time!

Sounds awesome~! And tomorrow Wednesday might be a live #Ham4Ham day? Keep an eye on LMM's twitter! It would be awesome if you could catch a glimpse of Hamilton shenanigans as well.

Oh yeah, and it it's not on your list already: the National Museum of the Native American on One Broadway is well worth a visit.

Oh, but you saw the crowds and everything live! That's so exciting! (They weren't doing the live #Ham4Ham shows when we were in NYC, or I would've gone!)

If you want to try some authentic Japanese food other than sushi, I have to recommend Ootoya! It's one of my absolute favorite Japanese restaurant chains - basically Japanese home cooking. You can find it in most Japanese cities, and now that I don't get authentic Japanese very often I take every chance I can to eat at Ootoya. (We went in NYC.) They've got a counter to eat at, so you can go by yourself without it feeling too weird, and the staff was nice and helpful so you could ask them about stuff you want to try.

Oh I should mention: we went to the Times Square Ootoya, so I know that one has a counter/bar area. I don't know about the other two shops, but the menu should be the same in all of them (and they're a non-tipping restaurant too, yay).

I Googled "Ootoya NYC menu prices" and got a whole list of actual prices. Roughly $18 for a fish dish, $15 for a nice pork katsu, $13 for a chicken & egg bowl and $11 for a cold soba. Most expensive dishes are in the $25 range? So you can definitely try something there without breaking the bank, I'd say?

They might also have lunch offers? I don't know; we were only there for dinner (and had to wait ~30 minutes for a table).
