8 more misc. Yuletide recs
Dec. 31st, 2016 04:41 pmLast post of 2016! It's a good thing I told myself days ago that I would post recs today because otherwise I'd almost certainly be too lazy, even though I like reccing exchange fic before author reveals.
Live Free or Die Hard
Feeling Better by

3.6k, Matt Farrell/John McClane
Summary: The kitchen isn’t a separate room so much as a corner of the living room where the wood floor turns into ceramic tile. There’s a note on the fridge, scrawled in emphatic capital letters: EAT SOMETHING. Matt obediently peers inside and finds it better stocked than he expected. Milk and butter, eggs, apples, about six different kinds of mustard, a few tupperware containers with what looks like leftover spaghetti and meatballs, and, front and center, a plastic-wrapped sandwich with a post-it note that says, in the same scrawled hand: START HERE.
Why I like it: Lovely post-movie caretaking fic.
The Bletchley Circle
Statistical Methods in Risk Assessment by
ryfkah
6.5k, Jean/OFC
Summary: Jean McBrien was not entirely clear on her opinion of SOE sending women to spy behind the lines – but then, in wartime, one did not have opinions. One did one's duty.
Why I like it: It's been a while since I watched the show but I could see both characters very clearly and liked them both, and the way they fit together especially.
Killjoys
Pure As Snow by
Framlingem
2.1k, pre-series canon divergence
Summary: Johnny Jaqobis didn't grow up in the Quad. His brother left long ago; and then all his ties to home unravelled entirely.
Why I like it: Johnny <3 Good look at him and a plausible and interesting different path.
Hero From Otherwhere
One and One Makes One by

1.8k, Jesse/Rich
Summary: After their adventure in Gwyliath, Rich and Jesse don't need to talk about what's between them. It's just part of who they are.
And then one day Jesse stops coming to school.
Why I like it: I don't know the canon, but this is a nice look at how two boys are changed from their experiences in a different world and what could come next when they are back.
The Dark Tower
Bird and Bear and Hare and Fish by
scioscribe
11.1k, gen
Summary: “Roland, aside from giving us the heebie-jeebies about getting eaten by the giant painting we all have to sleep in front of, did that story have a point?”
Why I like it: I only read about one and a half Dark Tower books, but from what I remember (and other people say) this fits the style and tone of the books really well, and it is a nice magical tale experienced by close friends.
The Martian
Navigating by the Light of a Minor Planet by
delgaserasca
21.7k, Chris Beck/Beth Johanssen, post-movie
Summary: Beth Johanssen in the before, the after, and the now.
Why I like it: Great look at Beth, and her friendship with the crew and her relationship with Beck and with NASA and figuring out what she wants.
Men's Pole Vault RPF
How to Tuck and Shoot; Or, the French Model by
whetherwoman
3.5k, Renaud Lavillenie/Valentin Lavillenie, sibling incest
Summary: "surprisingly charming and sweet explicit pole vaulting incest fic, for the record" according to my beta.
Takes place in a vague 2018ish post-season.
Why I like it: It feels a bit awkward to rec sibling incest fic (several years ago I would have felt awkward about reccing RPF, howtimes I have changed), but this has well written characters and I liked it.
Good Will Hunting
Friday Night Bracing for Monday by
Addison_R
21.5k, Will/Chuckie, post-movie
Summary: Chuckie grows up a little, and Will moves back to Boston.
Why I like it: Nice and slow and warm, I really enjoyed reading about them growing and coming together again.
See you in the New Year! May it be a better one.
