Misc.: Eggs

Eggs are fantastic, why have I not been eating more eggs. Today I thought that the English term "sunny side up" is really strange, and then I realized that the German term literally means "mirror egg."

I already started this day with a sleep deficit, only managed to do maybe a quarter of the things I wanted, and tomorrow is really annoying schedule-wise and it'll be a late night, but I'm still awake at 4:30 because I started a long fic at the wrong time. Stupid. (But I also feel a little bit nostalgic because I haven't done this in a while. Not that that'll help me tomorrow. And I didn't even finish the fic so I'll be distracted too.)

Being totally culinarily incompetent, one of the few things I can make that taste good is an oven-baked omelet, which Sis insisted I learn when she hurt her wrist....

Here you are - click to enlarge, it's from her scribbled notebook and she says its very forgiving, you can reduce it easily, add other stuff, just like a normal omelette but you get to throw it in the oven and leave it.

All I know is it's easy and yummy.

Wikipedia says the word is from the 18th century, "possibly after the reflective gloss of the yolk," which seems as good an explanation as any.

I love eggs! The French would translate as "egg in the plate", although "mirror egg" is also exists.

Oh, I didn't know that! "Sunny side up" at least makes sense to me (the yolk looks like a sun), but "over easy"? Uuuh. Why??

I have no idea. Actually I don't think I've ever eaten an egg that looked like that? I might have to try it.
What are the words in Swedish and Japanese?

In Swedish they're vändstekta - flip-fried. Because you fry one side, then flip it over and fry the other! So that makes sense. (We also call yolk "egg yellow" to go with "egg white". Again: makes sense!)

Eggs over easy are really nice if you want eggs on a sandwich or something - or if you're just not fond of runny yolk. You fry it on both sides - make sure the yolk pops when you turn it - and it's all solid.

I've never seen an egg fried on both sides. Interesting. I used to not be fond of runny yolk ("egg yellow" in German too) so I mostly ate hard-boiled whole eggs or scrambled eggs.

Over because you flip them over, easy because the yolk is still soft. If you cooked them a little longer they'd be over hard.

Now, poached is what I don't get. Did you steal it?

Clearly you are only allowed to poach eggs that you stole *nods* ^^ Wikipedia tells me a German word for them is "lost eggs", though I don't think I've heard that before.

Lost eggs is great! How about "dippy eggs"? We use that word here for soft-boiled eggs, and also fried eggs with very runny yolks.
