Finally!

DADT is (almost?) repealed (I´m not sure how American legislature works exactly, but everyone seems convinced that the repeal is certain.) I´m very happy and also relieved.

I planned to do a post on how I started to take gay discrimination (and discrimination in general) seriously, how I feel it affects me personally and how I see the situation in Austria, but I want it to make sense and I haven´t found the time yet. Also it´s not easy to find coherent words. I just had to mention it here otherwise I might get lazy and "forget".

I just wanted to share this: In Vienna we have two free public transport newspapers; they´re both low quality and rather populist. One of them is still better than the other and I picked it up today because I was bored. On the first page there was a short note that read as follows, translated loosely by me: "Barack Obama reforms the military. Finally: Homosexuals are allowed to serve in the US Army."

That "finally" was such a wonderful surprise.

Crash course: both houses of our legislature passed the bill, so it needs only the President's signature to become law. A quick check of news indicates the signing is scheduled for tomorrow. It's not dead at that point; instead, there's some kind of timeframe for phasing it out, and it sounds as if that'll last months. (There's a tl;dr summary of the requirements and opposition here (http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2010/12/implementing_dadt_repeal.html).) But it is going away, at long last.

I really like that note you found from the newspaper.

Thank you! Yeah, months of adjustment period sound much more likely than fanfics´ "DADT was repealed, let´s all have a coming-out-party with rainbow pins." But now there will be rainbow pins eventually!

It considerably raised my opinion of that newspaper, to be honest. I´m apparently easy to please.

Ich sag nur dazu: Zeit wirds! :)
