Star Trek: Discovery

Things I planned on doing today: start with my studying schedule for the January exam.
Things I did not plan on doing today: watch the rest of Star Trek: Discovery and spend the whole day thinking about it.
I watched the first two episodes a few weeks ago and I mostly liked them (especially Captain Georgiou), but I was not in the mood for a show about war so I didn't continue. But DD told me to watch the rest and I said I would over the winter holidays, so I started yesterday. At first I thought they were okay, then there was a lot of eye-rolling about characters being stupid, and now I want more immediately and I'm really glad I waited so long because the new episodes will come out soon.
Ep 4, The Butcher's Knife…
- did they seriously not blow up the Shenzou, stupid
- the officer the tardigrade killed had it coming, seriously, safety protocols are a thing?
- Michael tricking Saru like that, ughhh, there was no reason for it
- so the tardigrade will be an Omelas problem, good of the many vs. torturing one creature?
- why the shaky cam at times
Ep 5, Choose Your Pain:
- ugh, torture plots
- Mudd is an asshole and I hate him, but leaving him to be tortured? Harsh. Seems unwise. But looking back at it later, yep, Lorca totally would.
- Michael talking about his race/culture when arguing with Saru, not a fan
- Lorca blew up his crew so they wouldn't be tortured? Uh…
- I kind of like Stamets
- uh, the Federation will not be happy that they let the tardigrade go…
Ep 6, Lethe:
- uh, you make the guy who was a POW and being tortured for 7 months chief of security, and not even a mention of downtime of psychological evaluation? I assume at least an evaluation happened off-screen, but still, seems like a bad idea.
- "Bring her back in one piece or don't come back at all" – man I'm really starting to hate Lorca
- I like Cornwell, she's sensible
Ep 7: Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad
- Time loop episode, yay!
- They're going for a romance angle already? Tyler just showed up two episodes ago! And heavy, too.
- Poor Stamets' boyfriend, that change must be really difficult to deal with. But at least Stamets is under less pressure now, I suppose…
- Fucking Mudd, ugh.
- Cycle 53 and Stamets never had the idea to ask someone for a "password" before? Or did he try with other people first? Michael later says he tried with Tyler but thought Michael would reach him easier so it can't have ended well, but I don't understand why. Also if Michael just tells Tyler what's happening why the fuck does she have to dance with him first.
- Seriously, Michael gives "I have never been in love" as a password? Wtf.
- Why the hell does Stamets tell Mudd about how the spore drive works. He has to have seen him kill multiple people by now. Why did he even go to the bridge.
- If Michael had to commit suicide – which, in that situation, fair – why the hell not choose a less painful method?
- That ending made NO SENSE. How did they know Stella could be there in such a short time? Why give Mudd to Stella and not just space him? Maybe they couldn't block his hail only reroute it but still they could have rerouted it somewhere else. Also in the end they did break his control over the main computer, but how? Arrrrgh.
Ep 8, Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum:
- potential L'Rell&Cornwell team-up? :D …well, for like two minutes.
- …Tyler suggesting to leave the transmitter alone so the war doesn't end so Michael doesn't have to go back to prison, what. Let's call it a momentary lapse of judgment.
- Tilly&Stamets friendship!
- Speaking of experiments on Stamets: does that mean there aren't any? His condition definitely has to be monitored, it's experimental and he is very important! They know the tardigrade got worse the more they used the drive, they cannot just blindly hope that there are no side-effects for a human. His boyfriend is a doctor! They cannot easily take him off the ship because Discovery's ability is important, but that doesn't mean they can just close their eyes and hope for the best.
Ep 9, Into the Forest I Go:
- No way Stamets wasn't aware this information about his jumps is being recorded or didn't insist on it. I guess he was just surprised that Lorca had the information and cared, and that he hadn't looked at the data visualized like that before.
- Let's just ignore the fact that the sensors make noise when placed, which is so fucking stupid on a covert mission
- Of course the Klingons would catch on that they are planning something, how could they not have anticipated this
- Burnham! The duel! Snatching back Giorgiou's pin and then leaping off the railing to be beamed back in mid-air, she's such a badass I love it.
- So they finally deal with Tyler's trauma, I like it. Poor guy.
- Yess Cornwell rescue :) …the only one likely freaking out about this is Lorca who doesn't want to lose his ship.
- I love Stamets/Culber so much, I really hope Stamets is okay :(
- LORCA. Grrrrr. He's so good at manipulating people. Technically a fascinating character but I really dislike him. What did he do? Did he just want them to not go back to the starbase or did he have a specific destination in mind?
- Until this episode I was mostly entertained but suddenly I'm super invested, what.
Atm I really want the AU where Tilly injected herself with the tardigrade DNA instead of Stamets. It would be fascinating: for some reason Stamets can't and Tilly has to do it, and then as she realizes what she's done and that she slipped into this new role as spore drive component, dealing with the fact that it might mean she won't be able to become a captain. Stamets being envious but constantly asking her about how it feels. Tilly during the time loop! She would be much more sensible. She also wouldn't try to hide the side-effects. She doesn't want to be studied in a lab, but if there's any way that others could do the same so she can go back to being a normal cadet she'd be happy to submit to some tests. She's no less susceptible to being manipulated by Lorca but she's more likely to talk to others and therefore have other people say "wait a minute…"
Has someone written this? Is someone writing this? Tell me I don't have to do it myself.

Date: 2018-01-03 07:25 pm (UTC)Depending on how much you hated the pilot/what you hated about it I might recommend waiting until the season is over to see in which direction they go/how the show will choose to frame certain things.

Date: 2018-01-03 07:53 pm (UTC)Yeah, captain Georgiou was my favorite too, and it took me a long time to warm up to Michael. There are some cast members that I eventually came to like a lot (and one I really dislike but tbf that seems to be on purpose.)

Date: 2018-01-03 08:13 pm (UTC)There's a very cute canon gay couple :) (Okay not sure "cute" is technically the best term but I love them.) Also Tilly is adorable. There's one het romance that's imo way too rushed (to be fair there probably is quite some time between some of the episodes) but otherwise sweet. And I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll get to see more hugs.

Date: 2018-01-04 07:38 pm (UTC)So far I love how they handled it. Great established relationship, not conflict-free but the foundation is rock solid.
(There's a dangerous situation in the mid-season cliffhanger; I don't think they're going to kill off one of them and I'm looking forward to the angst and whump but I can't help being a liiittle worried all the same.)
