2017, Progress in Adulting
Jan. 4th, 2018 02:00 pmIt didn't feel like I'd written much last year (apart from weekly D&D session summaries), but AO3 tells me I published 23k, more than I thought and far more than in 2016, so that's nice :)
Fic I wrote
Nirvana in Fire
Ghosts - I wrote most of this in 2016 but this year gave up on finishing the longer version and just posted what I had
Dungeons & Dragons
Face of(f) the Enemy and Surviving Caterpillars - I wrote extremely self-indulgent fic about my own D&D character and I love it
The Bright Sessions
Only a little - the first WIP I posted and so far it works as motivation as intended, the third and last chapter is almost finished
Steerswoman
The Wizard's Tower - my third Steerswoman fic and I finally dared to write Rowan's PoV
The Adventure Zone: Balance
Undead Memories - another WIP, this one more experimental and not fully plotted out yet but a lot of fun
I didn't rec a lot until the advent calendar, which I enjoyed doing so hopefully will do again.
My main fannish home is still DW for social interaction and AO3 for fic, and I spend time on Tumblr but mostly lurk. I spent more time on Twitter this year but more for politics than fandom, and some time on Reddit.
I fell completely out of Hockey RPF fandom. This means I'm without a main fic fandom, which feels a bit odd. I read some of everything instead. Maybe something else will grab me next year, but that's unpredictable.
I'm also mostly out of hockey sports fandom. The Pens won the Cup again, which was nice, and I still get some hockey news via Twitter etc., but I don't care very much anymore (which is good for my nerves.) It was a fun few years, but I regret more that I lost interest in hockey than that I lost interest in the NHL; I still look forward to the Olympics, especially the women's games.
I'm still very into D&D. My character is level 18 now! (+2 LA.) Our party can do so much cool stuff, and fortunately our DM still manages to do a great job challenging us. I wonder if our current campaign will actually end this year and how, and what I'll play next.
I didn't watch a lot of TV this year, but I discovered podcasts, which I could listen to at work. Not many comics/manga either, but some good books, though I didn't quite meet my original goal of 52. I spent a lot of time watching Critical Role, but I'm not quite sure what that counts as. I watched several movies I enjoyed a lot, like Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman.
Fandoms I was "into" this year, at various points and to varying degrees: Nirvana in Fire, Critical Role, Natsume Yuujinchou, The Adventure Zone, The Bright Sessions, Akatsuki no Yona, … (and maybe I forgot something because that doesn't look like much.)
My main goal for 2017 was to get a job, which I did. From March to September I had a full-time job, and from October to December I worked 32 hours. It wasn't an especially interesting or challenging job, but the people were nice, the circumstances were good, it helped me get back into a routine, and I earned money, so overall I'm pretty happy with it. My contract ended at the end of the year, so I need to look for something new now.
Probably only part-time now, because I also enrolled at university again. Mostly because I was bored at work, and then I realized how much I'd missed learning. And it's interesting! Well, the practical parts of it, unfortunately I also have to learn the theory. I'm not even sure yet if I want to finish the program or just study until I find an interesting job, but in the meantime I'll try to enjoy it (and get a studying routine going because there's a fairly important exam at the end of January…)
Because of uni in addition to work I didn't have time for a choir or more sports, maybe next year. I could have done a better job keeping in contact with friends and meeting up more often, also hopefully next year.
Another one of my New Year's resolutions was to go on at least one date. I did! I went on two dates with the same guy and then we never contacted each other again, but at least it's something. Same goal for this year: go on at least one date.
(LB has a girlfriend and they're cute, I'm happy for him.)
Politics-wise 2017 sucked, both nationally and especially internationally. Hopefully this year will be better. Maybe I'll manage to get more involved somehow.
Once again, fandom has been one of the brightest spots for me all year, and I love all of you guys. Here's to a good, happy, healthy, and successful 2018 *raises glass*
