My D&D group and I went to a room escape game today and we saved the world from the zombie apocalypse with two seconds to spare :) It was a lot of fun. They showed the zombies advancing on the stairs on a monitor, which added to the adrenaline.

We finished watching "Guardian"! What a ridiculous show, I love it. Actually we finished on Sunday, but now that I'm not afraid of spoilers anymore I immediately went to take a look at the fandom. Not that I've seen much yet (it's not that big, and I also got distracted) but still, now I can.

I knew it would not be a happy ending because I've been told that this is just how Chinese dramas work, so I was prepared, and overall I was okay with it. All the stuff on the surface made no fucking sense: if you absolutely have to pretend there are battles going on without showing any because you don't have enough extras (I assume), you should at least have the sounds of battle. Everything being calm makes even less sense. Okay, seeing some characters from earlier again was nice, but still.
Ignoring that, the scenes in Dixing also didn't make much sense but they had very nice h/c. People tied to pillars, bleeding, trying to save each other, sacrificing themselves etc. It was nice to see Lin Jing again (wow, the CGI "inside of Ye Zun" was especially terrible.) There were a couple of plot threads dropped, but whatever. (I wonder what 1000x stronger Da Qing would have looked like. Also, because a cat has nine lives, he might even have survived it.)
Overall, the cause of Ye Zun's hatred was a misunderstanding, underlining the theme of "before seeking vengeance make absolutely sure your reason is solid, moron" and "they should have just fucking talked."

I was okay with the epilogue, too. Zhang Shi taking over Zhao Yunlan's body was unexpected but interesting. The SDI expanding makes no sense with Dixing and Haixing being completely separated but maybe others are experimenting with serums, idk. Did Da Qing really never find out who gave him his collar?, shame. Chu interrupting Guo's date was fun ^^

I'm still thinking about what the time travel + Shen Wei's long sleep means for the characters. On the one hand the long sleep is kinda ridiculous, on the other hand I also kinda like the idea of Shen Wei being so much younger than everyone assumes he is. Ah well, this drama has so many plot holes, I can pick and choose what I want to think anyway.

The next day DD, who knows Chinese, read the novel (I'm envious) and then told me about it. The novel world sounds pretty cool, with spirits and gods and ghosts etc., and Chu as a necromancer. I can't believe Lin Jing is a monk and not a sorcerer ^^ Da Qing spending most of his time as a talking cat and making a blog with pictures of himself is great.
While the drama has time travel, the novel has actual reincarnation. It sounds good too, but tbh I think I kinda prefer time travel, it's one of my favorite tropes for a reason. Also, from what DD told me of the characters from the novel, I think I might prefer their drama versions as well. The differences between novel and drama are pretty big (it's a bit annoying that people apparently use the TV fandom tag for fic based on the novel as well but whatever.)

One advantage of the drama being of, uh, not the highest quality is that I'm way less nervous about writing fic for it than for e.g. Nirvana in Fire. Okay a story doesn't have Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's faces, but every fan of the drama loves h/c tropes and is fine with a certain degree of ridiculousness. (Of course I say that now, I might change my mind when I actually try to write something.)

I really like how much this is a theme in the whole show!

Not me. I'd gladly take fifty more of that. *g*
