Six more recs from Yuletide 2018 – better late than never.
The Realms of the Immortals by nirejseki (Tortall, Immortals Quartet)
57k, Rikash/Daine
Summary: Rikash knew he was signing up for a lot when he became Lord of the Stone Tree Stormwing nation.
But joining forces with the extremely dangerous, mysterious, and oddly intriguing Veralidaine Sarrasri, the famous Stormwing Killer, on a road trip through the Divine Realms to assassinate those immortals stupid enough to risk the destruction of the world by working with Chaos?
That's - unexpected.
Why I love it: I do this rarely, but when I finished reading this fic I immediately read it again and then had to leave a comment on every chapter pointing out my favorite parts because there were so many. The characters and their relationships are fantastic, the plot and adventure and action are great, and it's frequently hilarious. It's been a while since I read the books so I'm not completely sure how much of the worldbuilding is original, but the Stormwing culture etc. are also very well done.
Canon knowledge required: probably yes
The Christmas Present by SunlitStone (Temeraire)
5k, gen
Summary: Temeraire and Iskierka discover (something adjacent to) the true meaning of Christmas.
Why I love it: This is a great example of dragon logic, and also friendship.
Canon knowledge required: probably not
Lifeline by Sholio (The Punisher)
10.5k, gen
Summary: A flashbang leaves Frank temporarily blind and deaf while attempting to rescue hostages, including David.
Why I love it: Excellent h/c rescue fic with very nice teamwork.
Canon knowledge required: No
Venom Versus Christmas by Dira_Sudis (Venom)
4.6k, Eddie/Venom (&Anne/Dan)
Summary: Eddie doesn't like Christmas, but Venom really likes celebrating things.
Why I love it: This is so sweet :) Yay friendship and people being nice to each other and a little creativity.
Canon knowledge required: summary only
The Canary by Kainosite (French History RPF)
6k, Pierre-Jean de Béranger/Jaques-Antoine Manuel
Summary: When Béranger is brought up on charges of sedition, Manuel is determined to spare his friend from a long prison sentence by any means necessary. But the prosecutor Marchangy has plans of his own for the songwriter, and to stop them Manuel may have to find out just how far he's willing to go.
Why I love it: Yess give me all the stories about people having to test how far their various loyalties go.
Canon knowledge required: No
Exchange by karanguni (Sengoku Jidai RPF)
3k, Uesugi Kenshin & Takeda Shingen
Summary: If it takes a thousand hours to weave together cloth, Terutora thinks, what is a thousand years to weave together all the countries under Heaven?
Why I love it: Enemies who respect and admire each other is such a great trope, and this is a beautiful look at their relationship and importance to each other throughout the years.
