Words and witches
Sep. 6th, 2019 11:25 pmI wrote a fic today! It has 1.4k words! With the exception of one day in July, I haven't written this many words in one day since, idk, probably February. Still needs to be edited, but it's even for a h/c bingo square! I'm proud of myself. And also not, because I found the time and was especially motivated because I'm procrastinating on studying for the exam on Monday... Accounting and tax law, both interesting but still, studying.
The rest of the inspiration came from the book I finished today, The Winter of the Witch, third part of the "Winternight" series. (Which mostly takes place in summer iirc, details.) I enjoyed it a lot, and there was this one storyline I especially loved, unsurprisingly: Sasha and Dmitrii, because I looove stories about fealty and loyalty and betrayal. I expected we'd get to see Sasha trying to regain Dmitrii's trust, I didn't expect him to lie to Dmitrii again only a few hours later! To save his sister, again, this time from being blamed for the fire. And Konstantin tells Dmitrii to ask Sasha directly and this time Sasha admits it and it's delicious. And later Olga begs Sasha to stay but he can't because Dmitrii gave him a task, as price of his trust, but when Sasha returns to Moscow Dmitrii has him thrown in prison! As a ruse, but still, sooo good. And when Vasya goes on a dangerous journey again Sasha says he'll go with her, and Dmitrii allows it even though he needs Sasha because he understands why Sasha wants to go. And Sasha volunteers for single combat against a Tatar, and Dmitrii reluctantly allows it and tells him not to get himself killed and arms him at dawn, and Sasha asks for forgiveness again - "Do we talk of forgiveness, brother?" said Dmitrii. "The left hand does not beg forgiveness of the right." Then Sasha wins but dies, and refuses to come back, and the first thing Dmitrii asks after after his victory is Sasha. Like candy.
I also loved Sasha's relationship with Vasya, and that he comes to kinda accept Morozko even, and Father Sergei too, and the two-religions-compromise Vasya manages to arrange. Neat solution.
I also really liked that the solution to the conflict between Morozko and Medved was not to imprison one of them, but set both of them free (but with constraints.) And that Medved actually cared for Konstantin – I still hate Konstantin but here in this book I at least sympathized a little with him too. I liked how Vasya found Morozko's prison, by remembering the connection between the bird horses, and though I rolled my eyes a little that it was sex that made him remember in general I liked how low-key their romance was. Olga meeting Morozko was fun. I was a bit disappointed there wasn't even a mention of Vasya's other siblings – I think Irina was mentioned once? – but I choose to believe that she'll visit Alyosha and Irina. And I'm so glad Solovey is back! I liked Ded Grib too.
There's no solution for the extreme sexism, but at least Vasya can escape it and she has a sanctuary to offer Marya too. (And maybe Dmitrii learned something from knowing Vasya, there's always hope.)

Date: 2019-09-08 06:25 pm (UTC)I wasn't trying to brag! My point was that, while people sometimes focus on my monthly wordage, my daily wordage these days - on the days when I write! - is about the same as yours was. So 1.4k words is magnificent!

Date: 2019-09-07 08:58 am (UTC)Is the 1.4k fic you've written for this fandom, or just inspired by it? If it's the former, I'm very much looking forward to reading it once it's ready to be published!
I'm not sure if you're into fan art, but Katherine Arden has been posting/retweeting a lot of Winternight stuff over the past few days. Her username is
