TMA: That was the circus
Nov. 24th, 2019 10:37 pmI finished season 3 of The Magnus Archives. I have a lot of feelings. So many I made some notes during.
#102, Nesting Instinct: There must be "five times Melanie tried to kill Elias" fic, right? Though it's actually not that funny… Poor Melanie.
And Jon just "knows" things now… Like that Gertrude and Gerard were working together, yes :)
#103, Cruelty Free: Sometimes you have to deal with a monster pig. Probably a normal day at the office for Gertrude and Gerard.
#104, Sneak Preview: TIM. He didn't even know about the Unknowing! And… well, I have a lot of Tim feelings. And I want Tim & Martin to be friends. And I want to know why Jon asked Tim to be his Archival assistant, and why Tim agreed. (We'll probably never get that :( )
#105, Total War: DD had a lot of thoughts about an institute in Beijing and how unrealistic it is that an institute would have survived there during the time of the Cultural Revolution, I theorized it would have had to make deals with other Powers to somehow survive. (I still hope I can get her to write it.)
Also, it keeps getting creepier when people compliment Jon on how good of an archivist he is. Michael did it too…
#106, Matter of Perspective: Melanie's performance review, Elias is the worst.
#107, Third Degree: ookay so Gertrude was definitely attempting some kind of necromancy, right? But was it enough before she got caught? And in the meantime, Julia Montauk and Trevor Herbert!
#108, Monologue: heh, that conversation between Peter Lukas and Martin.
#109, Nightfall: DD called Julia and Trevor "basically the Winchesters" and she's not wrong.
#110, Creature Feature: Yeah, probably a good thing Martin read the statement with the giant spider. Also, yay assistants conspiracy.
#111, Family Business: finally!! Gerard Keay statement!!! And in person, too. That was so great. He asked Jon to call him Gerry <3 After asking Jon to finally put him to rest. Understandable but sad.
And Jon admitting that he likes being able to make people tell him stuff… uh-oh.
Hm, why does Gerard think Gertrude made him into a page? (And what if she hadn't been interrupted?)
#112, Thrill of the Chase: I was spoiled for Daisy sorta falling into the Hunt, but this was a strong hint.
#113, Breathing Room: so only Hunters can kill servants/avatars? Hmm.
#114, Cracked Foundation – finally a Jon&Tim conversation! And it was great. Makes complete sense that Tim feels like he can't trust who anyone is, after Sasha – except, weirdly, Jon. And he could have tried to capture their voices on tapes, except he's afraid of the tapes, too. Ugh, everything sucks for him. Still, polaroids would probably have worked? I want the fic where Tim stays friends with the rest, please.
And more about Hilltop Road, this time a crack that draws people in and then their world is different – sounds kind of like memory manipulation/reality rewrite the way the Stranger does it, but so far we haven't seen the Stranger associated with Hilltop Road and not the Spiral either, and it doesn't sound like either the Web or the Desolation? Hmm.
#115, Taking Stock: So Mikaele Salesa was one of Leitner's assistants, yep that makes sense. Wait, so the Distortion has never told Jon a lie, "wouldn't dare"? Huh. Aww, I wish Jon had been a little more understanding with poor Helen, they are suffering from somewhat similar things.
#116, The Show Must Go On: is this Elias actually being helpful, wonders will never cease.
#117, Testament: So. Many. Feelings. Jon deciding to trust people! Jon being awkward about having listened to the tapes, including the office gossip, including the gossip about him and Martin! Daisy being Basira's fixed point! Poor Melanie being so angry. Martin's… everything! Tim addressing the tape directly, and just, Tim! And Jon near crying when he makes himself burn Gerry's page like he promised, aäsdlfjäasldkfja.
#118, The Masquerade: Martin with the sacrifice play, setting himself up to be tortured by Elias so Melanie could search his office, shit. That took guts. Loved their confrontation.
Meanwhile, in the Museum… ouch.
#119, Stranger and Stranger: TIM :(((( At least he went out like he wanted.
#120, Eye Contact: oh shit. So about those nightmares… And Jon took statements from people like Jude Perry, and Helen Richardson… and of course Martin, and Melanie, and Basira, and Daisy, and Julia and Trevor…
The police officer seems oddly confident, wonder what is up with him and if we will see him again.
And Peter Lukas is very creepy already. Too nice.
I like to think of the rest of the Institute's perspective on what is going on in the Archives – suddenly out of the blue Elias gets fired because he murdered someone? What the hell? ^^
That was a great season! "Family Business" and "Testament" were two of my favorite episodes until now, so good. "The Masquerade", too. So much good stuff. And, I'm sure, more still to come.

Date: 2019-11-25 08:19 pm (UTC)That was one seriously badass move by Martin. It was part of his(!) plan, so he must have thought about what Elias would torture him with - but not too much, because Elias might have become suspicious, they don't know how good Elias is at mind-reading.
