Back in April 2019 I watched the first season of "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime", aka TenSura (review.) Recently I found out that the first half of the second season has already aired, and despite the fact that she usually dislikes watching anything animated, DD agreed to watch it with me :)

It was still as much fun as I remembered. A very enjoyable power fantasy, with a good supporting cast and h/c potential etc. I enjoyed watching the first season again, and watching with DD made it even better. The OAD extras were fun too. And then season two raised the stakes and it got more dramatic and exciting and now we have to wait until July for the rest of season 2!!!!

My favorite part of the season 1 rewatch was talking about the obvious (love) triangle between Kaijin, Vesta, and Gazel Dwargo. So much potential there! Unfortunately I couldn't find the 50k drama this deserves (or even something shorter – the fandom is not very big.)

I also liked Milim better than the first time. She acts like a young teenager, and she loves attention, it's not a big surprise that she's mostly running around in a bikini. She seems like she's very easily manipulated. I hesitate to underestimate her, because after all she's an extremely powerful demon lord and much older than she looks and in certain aspects, e.g. tactics, I'm sure she's very smart, but emotionally, not so much.

The OAD "intermission" episodes started out basically with two porn episodes – at least the one with butt sumo was a dream, but then there was the tentacle porn one. That was pretty, uh, explicit ^^ But at least everyone got the same treatment, excepting Rimuru.

Speaking of the tentacle porn episode, the ongoing joke with Shion's cooking being terrible and dangerous is so annoying. It makes her look really stupid and self-centered that she never notices, yes everybody tries to hide it from her but very badly. And Shion and Shuna fighting about Rimuru to the point of him worrying about being pulled apart is also not very funny to me. Set some freaking boundaries! But those are common tropes, so I don't have hope that it'll change.

Then three episodes about Rimuru and his students, and conveniently we meet Black again, who says he has a debt to Shizue, interesting. As far as we know so far they only met during that one mission, first they fought and she managed to injure him and then he saved her. Maybe they met again later? Hm.

Season two started with a lot of diplomacy, which I was delighted by. And of course diplomacy between the Jura Tempest Alliance and Eurazania immediately involves fights ^^ I was surprised that Rimuru greeted the envoys in slime form, when he just got those new fancy robes, as that tends to lead to people underestimating him and I don't think that was the goal. The Shion vs. Suphia fight was fun (and I want Shion/Suphia fic, unsurprisingly), and Grucius & Youm.

Gazel Dwargo criticizing Rimuru's speeches as being too humble but also genuinely trying to help because Rimuru is less experienced as a leader, aww. And booze turns out to be the best trading good, of course.
I didn't really enjoy the scene of Rimuru taking Gobta + friends to the elven tavern, that just seemed mean; but afterwards I wasn't delighted by how Shion and Shuna treated them either, because it's not like they did anything actually wrong. The whole excursion seemed more like an add-on because it was an expected trope, but didn't really fit.

The fight between Rimuru and Hinata Sakaguchi was fun. I was wary when they introduced a church because religion has a tendency to complicate matters immensely, it's always hard to argue with faith in religious doctrines. We'll see how it goes. Anyway, the fight was fun and Rimuru just barely escaped by pretending to be dead. I'm sure we'll see her again.

In the meantime, the city was attacked first by three Otherworlders and then a hundred knights from Falmuth, and Shion and Gobzo and a few dozen others died :( That was a surprise, I did not expect that to happen at all. (I was also worried about Hakurou, but fortunately he made it.) That was a mood shift! Ouch.
Fortunately Rimuru learned how to possibly resurrect everyone just in time: he just needs to become a demon lord, then there's a 3,14% chance to bring them back. It's a plan. (It worked, of course it worked, but I do also want the fic where it didn't.)

At first I was skeptical of Myulan, and I'm still not sure exactly how long she even traveled with Youm – I got the impression it wasn't that long, and then I think her stay in the town with Youm and Grucius also wasn't very long, so Youm and Grucius' strong attachment to her seemed a bit much. But it did make for good angst when they discovered she'd been forced by Clayman to work for him and then tried to defend her against first Benimaru and then beg Rimuru for her life. And Rimuru pretends he'll kill her, and she accepts it but the other two don't, mmm that's the good stuff.
(She's very lucky Rimuru is so nice and didn't punish her worse. When Clayman said he had her "heart" I thought he meant a person she loves, not her literal heart. She knew, or must have known, that what Clayman wanted her to do would at the very least put the inhabitants of the town at significant risk, and she put her own life above that. Not evil, but a coward.)
But she survives, and Rimuru wants Youm to become king of Falmuth, and Myulan will go with him and Grucius too. I loved Grucius saying that he'll marry Myulan after Youm dies first because he's human ^^ and he insisted to Youm that his first loyalty will always be to Carrion, not to his "big brother," but, uh. Definitely juicy conflict potential there. This is the other trio I want 50k of drama about.

The vengeance fights were SO satisfying. Benimaru and Souei each wiping out one group on their own, Gabiru and the dragonewts flying, and of course Geld and Hakurou versus the Outworlders (and Rigur and Gobta to deal with the knights and actually remember to destroy the object.) Hakurou cutting off that guy's head, which he had to experience in slow motion, and Geld getting Shogo with rot, mm. (I assume Hakurou also would have known how to deal with the mind control, but in the end she was killed by her own comrade so that was not an issue.)
And of course Rimuru wiping out the rest of the army on his own, just hovering above the camp and shooting lasers. He seemed a bit overconfident to me considering he just recently lost badly to Hinata Sakaguchi, what if more knights of similar strength had accompanied the army?, but it all worked out, and he started his transformation.
(Wasn't it lucky that there was a convenient hostile army of sufficient size around right when Rimuru needed to kill that many people? What if there hadn't been.)

Oddly, despite the title "demon lord" I had not considered that there would be actual demons involved ^^ So Black was a surprise. I'm still not sure what to make of him tbh. He's apparently one of the three (?) highest-ranking demons out there, but he didn't have a name yet? Why? And why was he specifically summoned, and why is he so eager to serve Rimuru? Maybe it's just a game to him; but in the scene where Rimuru almost sent him away before naming him he looks kinda like a puppy. I assume we'll find out more about him.

Rimuru is a demon lord now, and those "connected to his soul" received gifts – canon soul bonds confirmed, sorta ^^ nice. I assume we'll find out in more detail later who, but iirc definitely all the kijin, Ranga, Rigur, Rigurd, Gabiru, and possibly Geld, will have to rewatch. And they were concerned about Rimuru still being himself after evolving (into a "demon slime," whatever that is) but that seems to be not a problem, fortunately, at least at first glance.
I also assume we'll find out more about demon lords' relative power levels. Milim is extremely strong even for a demon lord, as we see in her fight against Carrion, and she killed 10.000 people to evolve; Rimuru even more. Does that matter? When Geld evolved into a demon lord he just ate Gelmud. Hm.

Speaking of Milim, I'm very curious why she attacked Carrion, and why she's working with Frey, etc. We found out that she was a "dragon princess," born of a dragon and a human, and after resurrecting her baby dragon construct companion he went mad and she had to seal him away. (What about her parents? And how many dragons are there, iirc Veldora talked about four true dragons? Hm.)
I'm sure Clayman is involved somehow. Diplomatically it might be tricky, because Rimuru was allied with both; it'll really depend on Milim's motivations…

And Veldora is back! After 300 years in the cave and two years inside Rimuru, finally free! In a human body, apparently, for some reason. This will be fun. Veldora is not the most diplomatic person, but extremely powerful (I assume in his human body too), and he was respected and revered by the population of the forest for centuries.

We also watched the first episode of the "Slime Diaries," which was silly and sweet, and were delighted to find out that there will be weekly episodes of that until the second half of season two begins.

So to sum up, that was a lot, and I want so much fic (except not have to write it myself.) And now to wait until July… I could also read the novel or the manga before then, I'm not sure if I want to yet. But either way I look forward to new episodes.
