This week DD and I finally finished watching the live-action Hikaru no Go and overall I enjoyed it a lot.

Some favorite characters/things:
- Fang Xu. Such a fuck-up but he gets better! His relationship with Yu Liang is great. After almost giving up he decides to support the team he founded after all, gets Yu Liang out of his terrible contract, and Yu Xiao Yang told him he's not his student anymore but still all Fang Yu wants is his acknowledgment. And he finally beats him! In a best-of-five, where after his defeat in game one Fang Xu goes to Bai Chuan because he doesn't know where else to go, even though he doesn't think Bai Chuan either likes or respects him at that point. These two. And then Fang Xu decides to spend all his time supporting the young players in the Hokuton Cup because mentoring is important! That, and he ships Yu Liang&Shi Guang. xD
- Speaking of that ship (not even necessarily in a romantic way.) It took me a while to really see it, early on they were both alternately obsessing about each other and not always in a fun way, but the last couple of episodes really sold me on it. Yu Liang signs Shi Guang up for the Cup, and Shi Guang shows up, and they're clearly both so happy to finally be able to play together, it's lovely.
- Only possible in the finale because Hong He drops out. I wasn't a huge fan of that development for him. As mid-point of his character arc okay, but at the end it was unsatisfying. I'm sure fic could sell me on it but the show did a lackluster job.
- Other favorite characters: Mr Ban and Mr Zhu, the teachers. They are so great. They've known each other for a decade and they're so obviously close and familiar and comfortable with each other, I enjoyed them a lot. Also they're great trolls xD
- I was very glad we got to see the school Go club win their championship at the end, that was very nice. Gu Yu and He Jia Jia were another two of my favorites, and I really liked Jiang Xue Ming as well, and Wu Di, so it was lovely to see them get that win.
- Gu Yu and He Jia Jia also had great scenes during the time Shi Guang stopped playing Go. Poor He Jia Jia had to deal with Shi Guang attempting to drown himself, not at all fun. And Gu Yu refusing to stop asking and trying to convince Shi Guang to go back to playing was very nice. (If I had not read afterwards that the actor that played Gu Yu also played Nie Huaisang I never would have made that connection.)
- I liked how they showed Shi Guang's grief. (His poor mom.) I get why Chu Ying just disappeared without a word, but it was still a dick move. And that last scene where he gives Shi Guang his fan but doesn't say anything… weird, but whatever, it worked. I thought it was hilarious that the only person in the whole show Shi Guang told about Chu Ying was an acquaintance, who doesn't even believe him. I did wish he'd told Yu Liang, but maybe that would have taken too much space at the end?
- Speaking of the end, the parallel with those two small kids made me roll my eyes.

I'm not sure I'll check out the manga or anime, but maybe one day. I am curious what they changed!

I was thinking about which of my many new charity bundle games to play, but then instead I bought another game that I saw was on sale: Phoenotopia Awakening. I've played for six hours now and it's a delight. The colors, the exploration, the puzzles and quests… I just got the fishing rod, so next I'll probably do some fishing to get more money to get better gear before looking for the bandits. I know I should meet the scientist at the Lake Laboratory, but I don't know yet where that is so I'll keep exploring. Or maybe I'll fight the big stone toad I discovered in the Anuri temple – when I found it I was so low on health and food that I decided to leave it for later.

I adored the manga and liked the anime, and I was really happy with how they did the live action, rated it 8.5/10 on MDL. Aging the kids up was the best decision they could have made.

The manga spans several years, but they start out as 14 year olds. (They do seem a lot younger, though. A lot! From the drawings in the first volumes I would have pegged them as pre-teens.)

FWIW, I loved the Hikaru no Go anime! Especially towards the end as they grow up a bit.

I didn't realise the live action changed the names from the manga! I had fun figuring out what characters you were referring to. I'm curious to check out this version of the story!
