I did some more trading in the newly discovered village: turns out fishermen are very helpful for people who fish a lot, who would have guessed, and in the end I had multiple emerald blocks, yay. More villagers would be nice so I wanted to give four villagers bread but couldn't find the fourth one, and then the three stood in a triangle and at first it looked like a happy threesome, except then there were tiny stormclouds above their heads – relationship drama! Even after two of them left and I gave bread to a fourth one and they met up and had hearts with the remaining one, still stormclouds appeared, uh-oh ^^ Okay I actually found out they're annoyed because there aren't enough free beds for new children but I like my version better.

Also: more giant cave exploration. Have I mentioned scaffolding is useful? (As is a Smite IV iron sword.) Uncovering more and more of the dark areas is fun, if scary.

After a while, and after building a stable for my llama, my donkey, and my horse (which is now wearing golden horse armor), I decided to go back to the nether and put a leash on a strider so I don't have to find a new one every time, and then finally try and get some blaze rods. While trying to get on a strider I promptly fell into the lava and died -.- Fortunately I wasn't wearing/carrying my best gear, but still annoying.

I made some new gear and went back, this time I managed to successfully mount a strider and make it back to the fortress. I was prepared to fight blazes and skeletons, but the first thing I saw when I made it up to the bridge were two wither skeletons, and I decided no thank you and went home again to do some more cave exploration instead. Next time.

I finally redid my storage basement: I have fifty large chests now, those should last me a while. Organizing them was annoying, and now I just have to remember what I put where… those hanging signs they announced at the Minecraft Live thing might actually be useful for that! It'll be a while until those can be used in existing worlds though probably so I'll probably make do with normal signs for now. Or trying to remember what is where.

I went back to the nether fortress, this time I was better prepared and even built myself a tiny hut on a bridge to retreat to and to store resources etc. I explored enough of the fortress to see that it's right at the crossing of the nether wastes, and a soul sand valley, and not too far from a crimson forest. (Still want to get some crimson wood eventually to decorate my base.) I also killed a few wither skeletons, and two blazes but they both fell into lava and didn't drop anything that I could get. Then I realized that I didn't have enough torches or cobblestone, or even a shield. Fortunately I had made a portal nearby, so I went back to the overworld for more resources, super convenient. (The only thing I have to be careful with now is food: there's plenty of pigs around but I still don't want to kill them. Maybe I should start a small farm…) I got a little distracted exploring the giant lush cave around the nether portal exit, but it was worth it because I found an axolotl! And two more a few days later, now I have two pink ones and a yellow one. I found plenty of exotic fish too, but I couldn't catch any of them because of a weird bug I sometimes get when I can't use things, and when it worked again the fish were gone. Ah well, they'll be back, and not too long after I got some buckets of tropical fish from a wandering trader. If I breed the axolotls and get some more, and if I block off part of the water around my base, maybe the axolotls can hunt the drowned for me until one finally drops a trident? Hm.

Finally I managed to make myself leave the lush cave and go back to the nether fortress, where I promptly, after only a few minutes, killed another blaze and got my first blaze rod! And not too long after I found a blaze spawner, very convenient. I'm adapting a method I saw in one of Dream's manhunts: there's netherrack right above the stairs leading up to the blaze spawner, so I'm staying just far back enough they can't easily see me and but I can shoot them with arrows, and then every few minutes I run up and collect the loot. It works really well; the only reason I had to leave was because I unfortunately ran out of arrows. (I only had one Infinity bow and I wanted to save it for the Ender dragon fight.) I made it back to base safely, thankfully, and I now had four blaze rods! I could make Eyes of Ender now, and I was tempted to look for the stronghold immediately: I'm not ready to go to the End yet, but if I know where it is that'll help me prepare. Or I could go back to the fortress first and search for nether wart so I can then start brewing potions, that too would be very cool.

I couldn't decide so the next few days I did some "housekeeping" first, which included killing some cows (I had so many in one pit it was almost making me dizzy to look at them), but I forgot that my sword has sweeping edge and my cat was running around so I accidentally killed my second cat >.< I also have a pit full of chickens now and I found out that breeding and killing them gives a very nice amount of xp. On my next visit to my first village I also had to save my master armorer who had fallen into a cave with a zombie nearby and now I understand the urge to imprison villagers even better. (Still not doing it, but.) Just in case he gets lost again I traded for an entire back-up set of diamond armor.

Then I decided to try and locate the stronghold. It took me six eyes of ender to narrow it down to an approximate area about 2000 blocks away, and it's going to take more to find a place to start digging. I had bad luck with eyes of ender breaking, definitely more than 20% of throws as the wiki claims. But I found another village during my search! A big one, with six farmers, and a librarian who after breaking his lectern only twice is now offering Mending books. (Really made me wish I hadn't just spent most of my emeralds on back-up diamond armor.) There was also a pretty cat running around, but sadly it disappeared before I could kill enough spiders to get the string to make a fishing rod to get fish to tame it.

I need more eyes of ender so I went back to the nether fortress, this time armed with an Infinity bow after I managed to fish out a second one. I found a second blaze spawner and this time built an even better overhang, which made farming blazes – I don't want to say easy, but it didn't take that long and wasn't very dangerous to get over fifty blaze rods. That should last me a while. (Minor annoyance, I wish the Infinity bow hadn't come with Flame too, because not only does that do nothing against blazes, it only makes it harder to see them after shooting at them.)

As a bonus, I decided to explore the fortress further and look for nether wart, and I found some! I successfully made it back home and have now brewed my first potions, very exciting. I especially look forward to using night vision, and fire resistance in the nether. Ooh, I can explore the giant caves under my base with night vision, that should be cool.

Next steps, find the stronghold, finally fully enchant my diamond armor, and then… !!

Meanwhile, DD built herself a great base with a wonderful view over a coral reef and a mesa/desert on the other side, with a cellar with an underwater view, and some farms as well. Her first nether portal landed her in the middle of a huge nether wastes area, which meant that she soon had some netherite ingots but found exploring it boring. But I kept telling her about how convenient Twisting Vines are and other exciting parts of nether exploration, and eventually I recommended that she should go exploring in the overworld and then make another nether portal in the hopes of landing somewhere more interesting.

The first try landed her in the middle of a basalt delta, not very promising. Side benefit though, while traveling in the overworld she found a big snow and ice village – I did not know there were basically igloos in the game!

When she walked through her next nether portal the first impression was that it was a boring nether wastes region again, albeit with a surprising amount of zombie piglins, but then she turned and saw the warped forest on the other side, and then the fortress, and then the bastion, all basically right next to each other! (Well, for the nether. There are some lava lakes to avoid on the way.) Very cool.

Gonna contrast your game successes with mine:

"Finally built netherportal, forgot I subsequently had flint and steel in hand, discovered why we don't put wooden floors in our house..."

:DDD

Hmmm, the house itself stayed up and now we know that chests and beds don't burn, but bookcases do. So we had to rebuild the enchanting room. Also, lost a cat and a parrot in the firefighting! It could have been worse - all of our stuff is in that house!
