Getting my April recs in close to the deadline on a busy weekend, so you're getting Life Series animatic vids because I've been watching several of those on loops recently. (Fanvids are my primary way of finding new music I like nowadays.)
Most of these contain canon-typical levels of violence and death.
Running Up That Hill by Everen (Katy)
Tribute to Double Life
Music: Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush
Why I love it: Every single one of the artpieces is stunning and wonderfully expressive, the choices of scenes makes for great storytelling (the ending!), and the symbolism of the threads (color, placement etc.) is perfect.
[Who are you really?] || Last Life Animatic by Everen (Katy)
Last Life ensemble
Music: Everybody wants to rule the world – Lorde
Why I like it: I love the unsettling atmosphere here, the music and the darkness and the faces, and the art too.
Curses by chrisrin
Last Life ensemble: the Boogeyman curse
Music: Curses by The Crane Wives
Why I like it: Such a great job showing the boogeyman curse as terrifying! The killings are brutal.
The Other Side by chrisrin
Last Life: Grian and Bdubs try to convince Mumbo and Etho respectively to join them on the red name side.
Music: The Greatest Showman – The Other Side
Why I like it: Two of my favorite scenes from Last Life in a very fun animation.
Buzzcut Season Desertduo PMV by LocalWheel
Summary: Buzzcut Season follows the story of Grian and Scar through Third Life and Double Life, and the tragedy that is their relationship to each other across these various timelines.
Music: Buzzcut Season by Lorde
Why I like it: The art is very expressive and the flashbacks & parallels work so well.
Tongues & Teeth – Unfinished Desert Duo animatic by cherri fire
Top comment: "Forget the "I can fix him" dynamic, both of them looked at the other and thought "I can make him worse" lmao"
Music: Tongues & Teeth by The Crane Wives
Why I like it: *points at top comment* I love this take on them. Most of the art of this is sketches but still very expressive, and the dance at the end is perfect.
Bones by lemonandlimee
Limited Life ensemble
Music: Bones – Imagine Dragons
Why I like it: So much happened in Limited Life and this animatic does a great job with the highlights and the people and the story.
To go with this, I finally made some notes about the Limited Life finale and I actually managed to keep them shorter this time.
- The Clockers! Bdubs stayed loyal until the end and his family trusted him. Cleo gave Scott rare sculk sensors to buy time for Scar and Scott lated donated time to her as well, Cleo offered time to Bdubs if he needs it but he didn't take her up on it before he got blown up by Impulse, Cleo had a truly unfortunate (and unnecessary) death by creeper, Scar was stabbed in the back by Grian and Cleo died trying to avenge him. But their family reunion as ghosts was wonderful, as well as the ghost chat and them being outraged that Etho failed to avenge them. I had feelings and wrote fic about it.
- Grian, who despite officially joining the Nosy Neighbors still referred to himself as the last of the Bad Boys more than once, called his backstab on Scar "the ultimate betrayal," which is really funny because they weren't officially allied anymore, they'd tried to kill each other in combat before, but Grian knew that Scar was trusting him not to attack at that moment and he knew he was taking advantage of that, and, well, they do have a history ^^ Scar said he learned not to turn his back on Grian, but I'm not sure how long he'll remember that ;)
- For someone who started the session with so little time, Etho ending up fifth was very impressive. He killed Grian twice before asking if he wanted to enact the diamond sword pact. Grian was so incredibly relieved when Etho offered him that alliance, clearly he'd completely forgotten. (I wonder what would have happened if Grian had tried to enact the pact, at this point or earlier...) Tactically it was a good move by Etho and I do think they would have stood a chance – if Grian hadn't simply walked off the bridge, and missed the water by one block. Ooof. "Don't tell Tim!" xD
- I was happy Impulse, the last remaining member of team TIES, made it to the final 3 – the final 2, even – as Skizz had wished. Tango had such an unfortunate final death, dying from jumping down two blocks or so chasing after Scar because he completely forgot to eat in the fight ^^
- I liked the ending. Another fistfight would have felt repetitive and this was unexpected and exciting. And he's right, it is a death game! Scott didn't even really want to win again, he just didn't want to obviously throw either. As he said himself, he can't help that he's good at the game! He was happy about Martyn winning – another pattern continues, Scott's ally winning the game. (And Impulse knew he stood no chance against both of them and preferred that it wasn't Scott again.) Lore-wise this also has fun possibilities, especially with Martyn emphasizing his Watcher lore, there are fun takes like Martyn trying his best to defy the Watcher's will by not giving them the ending he thinks they want but actually playing into their hands the whole time but giving them an exciting finale.
Fingers crossed there will be a next season eventually :)
