schneefinkThe first episode of the new Life series came out! It's "Secret Life" this time. I didn't have time to watch immediately on Friday but then fortunately I didn't have any other (urgent) plans on Saturday.
How many notes I have for each PoV varies a lot, mostly depending on how convenient it was to type while I was watching.
Cleo:
- to the chicken, singing "I'm gonna eat your babies" – I love Cleo
- Cleo and Scott not teaming up because it'd be unfair to everyone else, they'd be too strong
- Cleo and Tango :D Day one alliance, that never goes wrong.
- ooof course Scar failed to keep his task a secret immediately
- Bdubs would steal from Cleo but not from Lizzie because he and Cleo have a history xD "You've got priors, is what you're saying."
- "There's a demon." "People don't usually say that to my face, Mumbo."
- "Hey Bdubs, where's your boyfriend?" "Etho is, let's see… wait is that what you meant?" "That is what I meant, yeah." (Cleo on stream that same day: "I genuinely call Etho Bdubs' boyfriend. Not- I don't call Bdubs Etho's boyfriend 'cause I think Etho has better taste.")
- Cleo wants a dog army! And of course Pearl too. Secret pupper alliance, niice.
- Tango had to get Scar to talk about Star Wars for sixty seconds? xDD Easiest task ever indeed.
- Cleo to Etho: "Are you on your own? Aww, that's sweet…" And inviting him to move in with her and Tango and Skizz, nice
- Yeah, Tango and Cleo don't believe for a moment Etho would be so careless to tell everyone his secret straight out, but they both still sleep when he requests it
- "What is it with you TIES people needing four people in an alliance, you know it doesn't go well!" "It's not about going well."
- Skizz: "I want to be more of a soldier than a leader this time." "That's okay, I don't take orders very well."
- Cleo, mad with Tango: "I'm going to get married to Etho, it'll be fine."
- Cleo choosing to leave Skizz and Tango, even though she mentioned having wanted to team up with Skizz for a while even, because she can't take how terrible they are with names, is great. To be fair I understand not wanting to live on "Love Island."
- "Tango come on, bro's before… Cleos." "Oooh, you're gonna die Skizz." "I know why you left them Cleo…"
- Lizzie serving Cleo an eviction notice and Cleo saying they'll come to the burning :)
- "You form the most interesting relationships with people, Cleo." "I don't try, it just happens!" "[…] Scar learns from you very well too."
Cleo moving in with Etho, I am absolutely delighted. Cleo already tried that for one moment in Limited Life but that didn't work out, thankfully this time it did! I hope it'll last for a while. They are so much fun together.
Impulse:
- Aww, Grian said Gem just refused to leave the Discord and Impulse interjecting that they love to have her here
- Impulse getting cherry wood as a task is much funnier than eg Lizzie. But he's right, it's hard to judge when he's successfully finished it
- Gem and the Scotts xD They're a band! Very dangerous group too. Two of the best PVPers of the server, including Scott who's great at this game in general, together with Impulse who has also been training and is also great at redstone, and all of them very careful and deliberate players.
- Gem punched him in the face once, it was fantastic
- Poor Skizz had to stay around Gem for his task, Impulse called him riffraff and a bit of a creep, Skizz told him he hopes he fails his task… ^^
- and Scott had to build his base next to someone – poor Gem got two people clinging to her!
Scott:
- he met all of his exes immediately xD
- Scott stopping Scar and Jimmy from teaming up because they would die immediately xDD He then mentions it to Grian and Mumbo and they wonder who would die first, Mumbo thinks Scar and then learns about the extent of Jimmy's curse
- "Jimmy, how do you survive sometimes…"
- then he wonders who he could team up with, mentions Gem and Impulse, and meets two of them together afterwards, good luck
Tango:
- Yeah he's teamed up with Skizz before and all that but he just likes the guy! His team-up proposal was very funny. And he did try to find others but most were either already taken or, well, Cleo left them.
- Just killed that frog, smh
- who else could join them? Skizz wants to crush Cleo's soul and get Etho ^^ good luck with that…
- Tango and Skizz thinking Bdubs can hear them and having a whole conversation talking him up for nothing xD
Lizzie:
- suggesting Bdubs get leather by killing a horse, Bdub's horrified gasp – and later in Pearl's episode he says he did kill horses for leather for a saddle xD
- having to deal with Cleo building on top of her base was very funny
- her task was extremely obvious and Joel was nice to her not pointing it out. (If people guessing a secret also counts as failing, I wonder how exact the guess needs to be for it to count.)
Gem:
- immediately going for the cherry blossoms together with Lizzie ^^
- she does have a reputation! Yeah yeah, Gem is great.
Poor Gem, not an easy first episode with both Skizz and Scott both being clingy, but she did well. In comparison with everyone else, Gem and the Scotts are in an excellent position. And their base looks very nice too!
Martyn:
- Martyn. Martyn are you aware that you do not regenerate hearts. Martyn why do you not light up your caves what are you doing. No wonder Etho and Mumbo said this is one of the most dangerous caves they've seen. I don't even care about going to the nether, that was funny, but the caving? Ooh boy.
- "Have you ever heard of TikTok, Etho?" xD
- He really got lucky with Lizzie's base. The next best bet would have been, idk, Etho's maybe?, but no comparison.
Pearl:
- Aww, Pearl vowing to protect Lizzie
- Mailbox really is a cute name for a dog
- Mumbo: we just have to be careful about ~unusual social situations. Though, that's difficult, in this group…
Joel:
- I know it's a Joel thing but both Jimmy and Lizzie flirting with him and Joel hardly reacting is funny
- I was much less surprised that Joel lost a bunch of hearts than that Martyn did.
He's still mostly alone as well, hmm.
BigB:
- uh-oh his task scroll looks different… and it's strange, too. (Grian later confirmed on reddit that BigB had the wrong datapack.)
- The lying and gaslighting is fun xD
- I too would have expected "all the way down" to be bedrock, but idk how much longer that would have taken. Seems kind of mean to basically remove someone from social interaction from an entire episode… idk. Ah well.
Mumbo:
- oh no, social tasks!
- killing that zombie like it's nothing, which was admittedly a little bit of a surprise. He's savage ^^
- The pun-off with Grian was an absolute delight.
- Mumbo trying to give a heart to Scar and forgetting what his actual username is xDD
- "Oh Mumbo, I'm gonna hug you! …oh, I just failed my task." Immediate hysterical laughter by Grian. Oh Scar. And then it turns out he could have just restarted if he'd read it properly. (To be fair, he thought it meant the first thirty minutes, which is not a completely out-there interpretation.) "You total plank!"
- Scar's rerolled hard task was so extremely hide-face-in-hands obvious and everyone just went along with it and he succeeded almost immediately. Pearl and Mumbo later wonder why Scar has so much good gear, it's because everyone feels sorry for him.
- Mumbo also didn't know how to craft a shield and didn't think to look it up in the recipe book either ^^
- The almost axis alliance, saved by Cleo!
- The sideways house! I do really like the entrance through the chimney, that's fun. It is very tiny though.
Grian:
- Grian already making one joke so bad that Mumbo didn't laugh, but then they laugh so much together that Grian wonders if he's too funny or with the wrong person to succeed at his task ^^
- "The rules in this series are suggestions, so who cares." (an exaggeration since before this he explained for five minutes he can't make too much of exception for Scar ^^)
- Mumbo saving Scar from a zombie and Grian saying he should have let him die, and then saving Scar from a zombie himself a minute later
- Grian is sad, he thought he and Mumbo were having a moment but it was just for the task :( Mumbo tries to reassure him but to no avail
- Etho sees Scar with TNT in his hand: "Scar you shouldn't have that."
- Grian left in Mumbo explaining to Scar that he completely failed at being subtle and they all helped him with his task on purpose, while Mumbo cut it out of his video ^^
- Grian tries making another bad joke in a group with five other people, Mumbo laughed, Grian put the text in with a sad smiley face. "I've got to stop hanging out with Mumbo, he just keeps laughing at all my bad jokes."
- "There's an enchanter already?" – Scar immediately put the TNT in his hand xDD
- Tango points out Scar is wearing an iron helmet, Scar jumps on his camel and rides away, Grian immediately joins him and then forgets to remind him about the helmet
- Scar: "You know how to exploit all the loopholes." And then Grian saying he's upset he let the situation with Scar play out the way he did
- Scar offering him a monopoly on cactus, aww (not knowing Scott already has some too.)
- Scar: "I hear nerds," talking about Etho, and then they "escape" on the camel
- Did Grian cut Scar saying "I could never forget BigB's big hole" from his video xD
- Grian almost despairing about too many people laughing at his jokes but then thankfully he meets Etho
- "What are you up to?" "I've been all alone here you know, I don't have social skills, I'm quite lonely, a little awkward… I don't know what I'm doing, Grian, honestly."
- Grian asking the audience if they laughed, oooh the implications if one was really into Watcher lore, js. And then even asking the audience for task suggestions…
- Grian plans to make an orchard. Fingers crossed there will be cool art of this.
He's still on his own at the end of the session, interesting.
Etho
- "This is a continuation of the Life series: First Life, Middle Life, Last Life, My Life, Whose Life, Your Life…"
- of course Bdubs found Etho immediately.
- Etho mentioning that Bdubs stole his horse last series and they never really addressed it but he was fuming the whole series – I don't even remember that!
- Etho didn't know about the gifting hearts mechanic? xD
- Bdubs getting chased by a baby zombie: "What, you ever played this game before?, get inside." "I don't think I have!"
- Impulse: "[Gem] assaulted me, she accosted me, I lost half a heart" Etho: "That sounds about right…" xD
- "Aren't we just some of the best adventurers you've ever seen."
- "Etho, have you gifted your heart yet?" "You own my heart, Joel." Aösdlkfjöasd "Remember boat boys?" "Boat boys, the good old days?" indeed. And trying to trick Joel out of his gift heart xD
- giving Tango 7 iron in exchange for 21 later – steep interest!
- Etho's shack: "It doesn't have a roof, but that's on brand…"
- Etho calling his place "the ranch," Jimmy: "I know the ranch…"
- "That's not your task, is it?" "No no no. No I just do weird things like this all the time, I'm quirky."
- Etho got lost where his base is; Joel: "I'm glad you're not near me"
- Etho knew Scar's base was the fanciest one with the most exotic materials ^^
- Bdubs and Joel saying they've never seen Etho so panicked. "only once, when we were in the lava in Double Life."
- "I'm not stealing people's beds, they're donating them." "To the Etho Foundation, who gave them to them?" "Yeah."
- Cleo moving in with Etho and giving him a golden apple, Skizz: "Protect your heart from this one Etho, she's gonna crush it."
Also, I think Etho was the only one I've seen so far not promote the merch ^^ Not even in the video description.
Bdubs:
- Bdubs asking Lizzie not to kill his horse and then killing several others for leather, "and then never again, never again. Just breathe… they will be reborn. […] I am so sorry, I feel terrible."
- Etho calls him "my boy Bdubs" ^^
- Mumbo: Cleo if you had to build your house on top of Bdubs' house, which side would you build on? ^^
- "Mumbo there's a zombie there, don't change who you are or what you're doing."
- Mumbo realizing that Bdubs built his house like that because of his task and Mumbo did his voluntarily xD
Scar:
- Scar calling himself BigB's official Life Series best friend – uhu
- still says Mango and Graylin after he failed his first task ^^
- Ooh, you get mysterious lines from the Secret Keeper if you reroll for a harder task, interesting
- Scar literally calling Grian light of his life, okay, this might as well happen
- in Tango's PoV Scar talked about Star Wars for maybe a few minutes, idk. Scar put in text that it was thirty minutes xD "You think I care about Ahsoka, come on," aww Scar sounded so disappointed at that ^^
- Scar joking about eating people – ConVex crumbs ^^ Of course he sets up a trading house pretty much immediately
- Wait the part where Jimmy apparently steals the camel and Scar threatens to burn down his base isn't even in Scar's own video xD
Jimmy:
- aww, making a spyglass just felt right now that Mumbo is back in the series
- "What did you guys use to say, yoho?" ^^
Jimmy too is still on his own! All the previous Bad Boys… He could team up with Tango and Skizz maybe?, that would be fun.
Skizz:
- poor Skizz, that might be the most uncomfortable task by far. And one attempt only?? (To be fair, anything else would have been even more uncomfortable for Gem.)
- the part with letting Scar reroll and then him doing his hard task is the only one that bored me on repeated watches because it was shown so often and it doesn't really gain anything from additional PoVs
- aww, Bdubs has words of affirmation for Skizz
- Skizz wants to be more of a soldier than a leader this time – he's always been that! He just got overenthusiastic last season because nobody else from TIES really took the reins or reined him back in.
- Skizz being a soldier for Cleo would be fun, but yeah sadly their senses of humor are only compatible in small doses.
- the slogan must be something really inappropriate for them to constantly cut it ^^
- in that flattering-Bdubs conversation Skizz immediately called Bdubs his potential liege, that guy wants a new king so badly
I don't think I'll watch every PoV every week, it just kinda happened. We'll see.
About the new gimmick: well I thought it would be something I wouldn't expect at all and I was right. Secret tasks, very interesting! Makes for very fun shenanigans. I like that there's no penalty for failing a standard task. Everyone will try to finish theirs anyway because of the rewards, but also you don't have the excuse of "I had to" if your task would negatively affect someone else.
The ability to gift one heart to anyone each session at no cost to yourself is also very intriguing and will surely lead to a lot of bargaining and great drama.
No regen is brutal though. Makes so many things that you normally barely think about – normally you don't really think about taking half a heart of damage – suddenly threatening.
And what's up with the Secret Keeper? Everyone could have gotten tasks and everything without a mysterious giant statue called the Secret Keeper, with a symbol reminiscent of Evo's Watchers on it, that gave Scar an ominous message when he picked a hard task. Cleo also played very coy about the symbol when asked about it on stream. Hmmm. Not sure yet how I feel about the idea of adding more lore directly into the series, I'll wait and see. Grian did mention there were more secrets…

- the part with letting Scar reroll and then him doing his hard task is the only one that bored me on repeated watches because it was shown so often and it doesn't really gain anything from additional PoVs

- Skizz wants to be more of a soldier than a leader this time – he's always been that! He just got overenthusiastic last season because nobody else from TIES really took the reins or reined him back in.
- Skizz being a soldier for Cleo would be fun, but yeah sadly their senses of humor are only compatible in small doses.
- the slogan must be something really inappropriate for them to constantly cut it ^^
- in that flattering-Bdubs conversation Skizz immediately called Bdubs his potential liege, that guy wants a new king so badly
I don't think I'll watch every PoV every week, it just kinda happened. We'll see.
About the new gimmick: well I thought it would be something I wouldn't expect at all and I was right. Secret tasks, very interesting! Makes for very fun shenanigans. I like that there's no penalty for failing a standard task. Everyone will try to finish theirs anyway because of the rewards, but also you don't have the excuse of "I had to" if your task would negatively affect someone else.
The ability to gift one heart to anyone each session at no cost to yourself is also very intriguing and will surely lead to a lot of bargaining and great drama.
No regen is brutal though. Makes so many things that you normally barely think about – normally you don't really think about taking half a heart of damage – suddenly threatening.
And what's up with the Secret Keeper? Everyone could have gotten tasks and everything without a mysterious giant statue called the Secret Keeper, with a symbol reminiscent of Evo's Watchers on it, that gave Scar an ominous message when he picked a hard task. Cleo also played very coy about the symbol when asked about it on stream. Hmmm. Not sure yet how I feel about the idea of adding more lore directly into the series, I'll wait and see. Grian did mention there were more secrets…

Ooh, I was seeing some interesting theories about Watcher lore wrt his task, since it's the only one that's doing something uninteresting, taking him away from the rest of the group, has more sentences than the other tasks, and even suggests he could make it his base. I'm kind of disappointed to hear that it's just the wrong data pack! (Or is it... I guess we'll have to see next session. I think it would be fun if one person per session got a "fake" task like that and that led to some interesting Watcher lore). Grian did say more surprises to come! I know that 3rd life lore has been previously nearly entirely unscripted, but I'm actually really interested in seeing them cultivate some lore a little more directly tbh
