Castlevania: Nocturne

schneefinkSeveral weeks ago I watched the first two episodes of Castlevania: Nocturne together with F, and today we watched the rest of the season. I enjoyed it a lot, it's not outstanding but it was fun to watch. It had many of the elements that I enjoyed from the original Castlevania cartoon: cool art and great fight scenes, a competent core team, different factions on the bad guy side and the corresponding infighting and politics, and underlying themes of religion, colonialism etc.
I really enjoyed the addition of Tera especially, a caring mother with her own backstory and secrets and a powerful fighter too. I was convinced she would die multiple times but she always made it – until the end, when she sacrificed herself for Maria.
I'm very curious what she'll be like as a vampire! Very powerful, presumably. I wonder how Erzsebet plans to keep her under control. I really hope she'll play a major role, it would only make sense.
I liked Olrox, who was introduced as a big bad but later revealed to be, hm, on the less cruel side of blood-sucking vampires and with a tragic backstory of his own; and who wants to work together with a Belmont against Erzsebet. And who gets sufficiently attached to his human lover to try and save him, only for Mizrak to call him an animal and leave. I look forward to seeing him again.
Drolta was not that interesting apart from her cool hair, and I'm not yet sure about Erzsebet Bathory herself. Very powerful, undoubtedly, but also arrogant. I'm not quite sure what her plan looks like in detail, but summoning an eclipse definitely caught a lot of attention. I was also unclear on what exactly the vampire's situation was atm, but to be fair I forgot a lot of details from the first two episodes so maybe it was explained a bit more there.
The abbot was, hm, I think interesting as a concept but mostly pathetic as a character. We'll see what happens next season. And what happens with Edouard, too.
The core three are a fun group, I like them and they have cool powers. Still some growing up to do but that's normal. (I'm especially curious how they'll treat Maria's idealism.) Richter got a very cool magical power-up, only to later realize he is absolutely no match for Bathory (yet.)
Instead, last-second rescue by Alucard! I was very happy he showed up. Can't wait to hopefully see more of him next season. January, apparently, so not too long.
