After Colony 195

schneefinkI finished Gundam Wing! I didn't get much of anything done this weekend but I don't really care, that was fantastic. Right now I'm full of squee and enthusiasm and I want to talk about everything, wasn't it great? But I do have to sleep and do homework (not in that order) sometimes, so this will only be part one of possibly many.
I even tried to make an icon - in ten minutes and I gave up on gimp at this time of the day, but still, Relena <3
Needless to say everything here is full of spoilers.
My favorite scenes: I'm certain that I'm leaving out many! Where to even start...
- The first time Heero and Duo meet. "How did I become the bad guy here?" It's not your fault, Duo *g* Poor long-suffering Duo.
- Wufei's first confrontation with Treize, and he and Trowa sitting at the campfire afterwards.
- Heero activating the self-destruct and Trowa carrying him away and Zechs just watching in Tallgeese
- Noin saving Relena from OZ
- Duo being glad that Heero came to kill him when he's captured by OZ after the self-detonation failed
- Duo watching over TV how Trowa destroys Deathscythe
- Trowa capturing Heero for OZ, and later when Duo gets thrown into the same prison as Heero and Wu Fei and they mock him
- Quatre begging Heero to kill him so that Heero can go save Trowa - oh boys *hugs them* (you have no idea how many times I deleted that phrase in this post because I thought it would make me look silly to write it fifty times)
- Queen Relena making her speech to the general assembly and when she sees Heero about to kill her she accepts it, except then the crowd begins to applaud and he decides to give her a chance
- Duo and Trowa playing chess, and Wufei interrupts and makes a move for Duo, it's a wonderful example of how they've grown closer
- When Zechs and his mobile dolls concentrate their attack on Quatre and Quatre speculates it's because he's the weakest, and Zechs thinks that he has to destroy the brain first (and Quatre doesn't need the Zero system anymore, but he took it when Heero told him to and saved them because Quatre is great)
- Relena telling Hero that he's amazing and he says "look who's talking" <3 And then she says how he gave so many people hope and the will to live and he says "don't make me repeat myself, I'm nothing compared to you" and just, awww.
- Noin taking a stand between Zechs and the Peacemillion and yet unable to lift her weapon
- I'm trying to decide on a favorite scene for Sally but I can't, she's just overall awesome. Maybe when she and the Maguanac corps try to salvage Sandrock at the same time?
And so many others I'm forgetting right now.
General rambling about things I love:
- Everything I said last time still applies. Competent people! It's not just their superior mobile suits, we see that for example when Trowa infiltrates OZ and is the best pilot they have. Heero is a good hacker, Duo is a good spy, Quatre is a good leader, Trowa is an athlete, and Wufei... hm.
- I love how complicated the question "who is the enemy?" becomes and who's the bad guy and who they should fight. Everyone is looking to the Gundams as symbols, for strength and guidance, and meanwhile we see that the Gundam pilots are kids and also unsure and sometimes quite hypocritical. Wufei, I'm looking at you! Emotions in battle make one weak, huh? Fighting in space is bad, hm? And Heero, who at first is so willing to lay down his life for the cause and later says "my enemy is who wants to take my life." We see Relena, how she takes up her father's mantle even though his ideal seems naive, but every time she starts to question it people close to her (Noin, Quatre, even Dorothy) tell her that she must keep believing, that it's important that she's a symbol for other people, even when other people look down on her for her naivete.
- I love that there's never a clear answer on who's right. Was Zechs/Milliardo right, was this the only way? We don't know. The only thing that's clearly shown as wrong is fighting with unmanned mobile suits, but things like Treize's glorification of battle or Relena's belief in total pacifism are challenged and are never definitely settled.
- I love that we get so many one on one interactions between the pilots. The only pair I can't remember spending a significant amount of time together is Duo and Trowa, unless I'm forgetting something. The pilots start out as enemies in several cases, then become tentative allies, comrades in arms, and then slowly friends. And I love all of them - okay, I only like Wufei, but all of the others, especially Duo, Trowa, and Quatre. And Relena (so much!) and Noin and Sally.
Things I find interesting or that aren't quite clear or that I'm not so fond of, in no order because it's past midnight:
- Lady/Colonel Une. Interesting, but I wanted a bit more to make it clearer. Or maybe I'd have to rewatch it again. My first impression now is that Treize knew what was happening, didn't help her in any way or try to make her understand what he was planning, and her problems were thus to a large extent. Which makes Treize a dick (apart from the whole "honorable and stubborn villain" thing) and I really can't feel sorry for him at all.
- The role of women in this world. All the world leaders at the Romefeller general assembly are men, so are 95% of the people in the military. It underlines how extraordinary Noin, Sally, and Une are! And despite the fact that he has many sisters, Quatre is the heir to his family's fortune. Quite the male-dominated future... Something to address in fic, maybe. It didn't bother me much because we got so many great female characters.
- Communication works strangely. Sometimes they seem to hear each other without any headsets or anything, other times mysteriously not? Oh well.
- How do Quatre and Dorothy know each other? There must be a story behind that!
- I watched it in Japanese with English subtitles, so now I hear the names as "Hiro," "Düo", "Torowa", "Katore", "Wüfei", and "Irina". Irina/Relena is the strangest one when typing the name.
- and several other things for some other time when I'm more awake.
And now there's still Endless Waltz to watch and other additional stuff, and then the fanworks! \o/
