posts about (the lack of) female mentors reminded me of the Emelan books by Tamora Pierce. I read the first three many years ago and liked them a lot, but they didn't have the sequels in the library. Now, though, I can read the books online, very convenient. I finally read Briar's book and just finished the "The Circle Opens" books.
I liked them, I enjoyed spending more time with the characters. Though the basic plot is similar - they discover someone with magic and have to take them as their student, which is difficult; at the same time crimes are happening and they help to solve it - it never got boring. I liked to see how the children developed in different ways. Crazy to think that they were only 10 when the first book happened... My favorite was probably "Shatterglass", because Tris is awesome, the relationship with her student was different, the crime plot was an actual mystery, and Chime and Little Bear are adorable. I'm very much looking forward to "Will of the Empress", I hope to see all the kids together again :)
