schneefink: River walking among trees, from "Safe" (Ronon sketch)

I enjoyed this episode. When I got to the opening credits I already knew that I'd write a lot about it - or maybe less, if the tiny grasshopper on my keyboard doesn't go away.

Pretty shot of the spacegate!

They arrive at night and wonder why nobody's there? Otoh, nicely realistic that of course they won't always arrive in the middle of the day. And that they don't tell where they're from or that they've come through the gate, since they can't know if the people even know about the stargate. I wonder what they wanted on the planet originally? If they wanted to trade, they should have come back during the day.
Actually, from the planet's entry in the database, shouldn't they have been able to figure out when it would be night where on the planet? Or, even better idea, why didn't they just land on a part of the planet where it was daytime? The planet is pretty big. They must have had a reason to land in this village specifically, since settlements elsewhere are even mentioned.

Ronon has batteries for his gun! Let's call them energy cells instead, that sounds more alien. But someone didn't pay attention and he put a new one in twice, heh. And sensibly he would have put in a new one before the mission.

Rodney and the kid is cute, and the whole team watches him indulgently. Awww.

Ronon's coat looks new; nice, but extremely impractical for Wraith-hunting. And he doesn't even take it off later.
Rodney, on the other hand, only has a hand gun and goes Wraith hunting. Really? This is just stupid. It's not like they're expecting an emergency with Ancient technology. He's only an unnecessary risk and in danger. But no, team is sacred.
Why is John annoyed when Ronon starts running after the Wraith? That's what they're here for! And Rodney must have been working out, he runs as fast as John and Teyla.

Baby!Ellia in the flashback looks ugly. But she has black tights. I like her better later, here in this scene she's just weird. Throughout the whole ep she switches between teenager and kid, it makes it hard for me to get a feel for her. But then, she's a Wraith, of course she's a bit different.

Debriefing in the infirmary? Not very professional. And no command staff communication, just Elizabeth, John, and Carson. It's a tight clique that runs the city.
But we get some of John's funny faces, at least.
I'm reminded why I dislike Carson: his accent is really annoying.

Their radios must be voice-activated. I think [personal profile] sabinetzin wrote that fic with "All units, all stations..." ^^

Actually, this is one of the few episodes where it makes sense to only send Carson and not a whole medical team plus backup: Ellia would be scared and the villagers suspicious.

Oh, sure, now the villagers are tired of doing nothing. And now John is all "let us handle this, even though we have given you few reasons to trust us and we don't tell you what we're doing." This has to end well.

Ronon's reaction makes even more sense considering that it's only a short time since he was a Runner. Would he have reacted differently in s5? I'm not sure. Maybe his gun would have been set to stun instead of kill.

What did Teyla expect Ellia to see, really? A landmark? Odds were high it would only be trees everywhere. I can understand that she asked Ellia to try, but she knows that opening one's mind to the Wraith can lead to one's mind being taken over, and Ellia is young. Did she think she could handle it? But Ellia is also a Wraith queen. Risky.

What, suddenly hunting Wraith is not Rodney's thing anymore, and before it was? That look is so unnecessary, John.

The little scene with Rodney and Carson is cute, though. And the background bubbling is very witch-hut-like, heh.

Poor Ellia. That was well done, except for the transformation to blue monster in a few seconds. Biology doesn't work that way.

And the villagers never found that camp? In ten years? Not very likely.

Wait, so Carson is the brave one who fearlessly wanders the forest and rescues Rodney, who incidentally has been on an off-world team for over a year and who is mysteriously very freaked out about not even his closest Wraith contact. Something in their food, maybe.

Zaddic protecting Ellia with his last breath was very sweet, in a weird kind of way. Again, the scene where Ellia feeds on him is well done.

You know you are in a forest with a Wraith that is freakishly strong and fast. What do you not do? Exactly, separate. *facepalm*
Otoh, giving Teyla his jacket to rest her head on is, um, really unnecessary and a waste of time, but a nice gesture, I guess?
Teyla and Ronon's conversation is pure gold. "And who decides when it's one of those times?" "We do." Yes!

And John is going after Ellia alone. Brave or stupid? She's so tough it takes several shots of Ronon's gun to kill her.
Ronon, of course, has stopped running and is walking in at a leisurely pace, twirling his blaster and barely not whistling.

That was fun. (Though I do think that I would have enjoyed it less if I wasn't already in love with the characters.)

Season Two is where most of my gaps are, strangely; I've probably seen this one, but I don't have a clear memory of it, and I know it more by description. I'm glad you've pointed out the nonsensical elements; at least I'll know to brace myself before watching this one! :)

I haven't seen about half of the first and second season, so I'm trying to correct that now that I've borrowed the DVDs. I'm pleasantly surprised how many nice Ronon and Teyla scenes there are in season 2!
Glad to help xD Pointing out things that don't make sense in SGA episodes is not exactly hard, sadly.
