Skiing, The 100

Back from ski holiday at my grandparents! The weather wasn't fantastic so I only got to ski three times, but it was great. Few things better than a day on a mountain with great snow, slopes with not too many people, good weather and good company.
I got to see relatives again I hadn't seen in months, that was nice. I had some time to read, though not as much as I thought. As a direct consequence I didn't get enough sleep and am still a bit tired, but that's okay.
DD and I finally caught up with The 100 today! Overall very cool developments, interrupted by people being incredibly stupid, so stupid, omg WHY. Pike attacking Indra's army – WHY. He didn't even ask them to go away, which would have either revealed or prevented the ambush he claimed to be so worried about. HOW could he not realize that the rest of the Grounders would retaliate? They don't have limitless ammunition or supplies, sooner or later they will die. Blood must have blood, they KNOW this already. Bellamy, what the fuck! Okay sure, Farm Station suffered at the hands of the Ice Nation, dozens of their people died because they trusted one of them and both Pike and Bellamy blame themselves, but STILL. This "all Grounders are the same" bullshit, wtf? (Okay admittedly Lexa betrayed them too in the past but still there are layers.) And Arkadia voted for Pike, it's hard to see why the Grounders should not kill them, if not for revenge then to get rid of the threat. Sure, Clarke makes a pretty speech to Lexa, but Clarke darling you must realize that there is no way Lexa can just let this go. 300 of her people died! The other clans would never go along with no revenge. If nothing else, Arkadia is still an active threat, and Pike is not interested in a truce. What does Clarke expect Lexa to do? If Lexa would be satisfied with the lives of the ten that committed the slaughter that would be generous and even that would be a hard sell to her people. It's obvious that Lexa has a huge weakness where Clarke is concerned (the mutual kneeling!) but she's still Commander, and as we just recently saw her position is not very secure. More so now that Nia is dead, but it's uncertain if the Ice Nation will accept Roan as king.
The additional Grounder culture bits we got were cool, the nightbloods and Polis etc.
People I still like a lot: Lexa. Monty (yess walk away from Jasper.) Marcus – he makes stupid political mistakes but he always tries his best and he's not as bad as Abby. Octavia and Lincoln, Indra and Titus, Clarke with some eye-rolling involved, and Murphy reluctantly.
People I don't like: Abby, Jaha. Pike, unsurprisingly, though I actually don't dislike Pike as much as I expected from the season preview. He's very stupid and violent, but current politics show us many examples of people reacting worse to milder things, so I'm not even that shocked. Still on the fence about Bellamy, mostly I want someone to punch him a lot. WTF, Bellamy. I did really like his scene with Clarke in the last episode. He knows he went too far and is too scared to face the consequences, but eventually he'll have to.
I'm really looking forward to more of all storylines, especially I'm hoping for a confrontation between Monty and his mom soon.

Date: 2016-02-21 09:02 pm (UTC)The 100 is full of unprepared people thrown into terrible and difficult situations and doing the best they can, which is often not good enough and then they have to deal with that. You have characters with completely opposite views but all of them (more or less) understandable. People make stupid choices because they're human and noble choices because they're human, there is no black and white. (Okay there is some, but also a lot of grey.) There's a lot of "what is morally justifiable when you're trying to survive/save your people?" Another thing that comes up often is vilification/dehumanization of the other side in order to justify what you're doing to them. Many connections can be drawn to current RL politics.
What I like about the show are first of all the politics, and second the characters, with different levels of idealism, and how they react to what is happening and to each other. Off the top of my head I don't know which other show/book I would compare it to, though iirc
Warning, the show has graphic death and torture scenes.
Does that help? I'd be happy to answer more specific questions too.

Date: 2016-02-23 10:07 pm (UTC)It sounds a bit too grim for me - I never could finish Battlestar Galactica. Hmm.
Thanks a lot for filling me in, though - it's always good to have an idea of what's on!
