2010: The Year In Which I Wrote Fanfic
Jan. 3rd, 2011 05:44 pmI started writing fanfic in 2009. Much earlier if you count the two self-insert One Piece stories and the Beyblade Mary Sue which I like to pretend don´t exist. But I started posting in 2010, which means getting comments, wheee! I love getting comments. &hearts
Most of what I wrote are short snippets, with one exception.
Fic I Wrote
Arriving in Pegasus - my second snippet in
lavvyan´s Goa´uld Mer´deth series. In August 2009 I spontaneously wrote Collateral Damage which probably counts as my first posted fic. (I was so nervous!) So that started the trend of borrowing other people´s ´verses, I guess. Also I started with writing McShep crack, which is probably in some way deeply ironic. But I´m still quite happy with how it turned out.
Respite - I worked on this for ages even though it´s only 700 words long. Writing a
whaleverse fic was intimidating and I wanted it to be good. I got two betas, which was a wonderful experience, and I´m very proud of the finished fic.
Three is a Group - for a prompt by
leesa_perrie, who wanted Rodney, Ronon & Teyla, angst with a bit of h/c. Those three are fun together. I wrote this quickly, but I think after a rewrite it could be good.
Brothers and Comrades in Arms - my genficathon story! 6.4k words. I signed up for
sga_genficathon on the last day and was so excited. The idea came to me soon and the next weeks I thought about it all the time. It became a story I really wanted to tell; I still think it´s an awesome premise. A Pegasus Coalition that can deal with the Earthers as equals (at least) and they fight Wraith together!
Five years is a bit fast, but canon gave me time constraints. I tried to use many canon Pegasus characters – Sora, Larrin, Kell, Tyre, Halling, Kolya, even Athor – but I also had many OCs and I became very fond of them. Especially Daim and Marle (who are together in my head), Tso, Karol and Queen Morahla, Harmony´s mother. I have so much backstory for all of them!
michelel72 made it a lot better and made me not kill Sumner. I´m satisfied with the way the Kell and Kolya scenes turned out and the last campfire scene makes me feel warm and fuzzy, which is probably a good sign. Tyre having a crush on Teyla still makes me grin.
I could talk about this fic for hours, but I´ll spare you. All in all, I´m ridiculously proud of it and I love it. The pacing is clunky at paces and I´m not happy with all of the scenes; maybe one day I´ll attempt a rewrite, but not at the moment.
I got great comments and it was recced, which made me very happy.
Five things:
Five times Teyla teamed up with another woman to save the day - awesome prompt.
Five weddings on Atlantis
Five people Ronon has loved
Five things Ronon never told anyone about Sateda - I love Ronon. Does it show?
I also participated in two mini writer contests to force myself to write.
LFWS:
Ancient Snowflakes/Snowdrop - I still like this.
A Warrior´s Tale - meh.
Forest Green - I like my idea, but couldn´t find a better way to write it.
LAS:
Every Day - this was boring even during writing.
Jump Off the Cliff - I wrote John/Elizabeth. Huh.
Other snippets:
Two for
sholio´s graduation party:
Radek´s Still
Sam and cat!Rodney - I want a photograph. It would be so cute.
Crack drabbles for
mcshep_match. Um.
cesare wrote Twelve Arms, a drabble series where Rodney gets turned into a dodecapus (also called Rodnopus), and my brain fused it with the whaleverse and this happened. I think it´s cute.
Domesticity, a Rodney/Jennifer/John snippet for
busaikko
And then I wrote a few fills for various memes that I´m not admitting to. Maybe sometime in the future, when I´m hopefully more confident.
A tiny little bit of One Piece:
Index for the November ´09 Chaos Thread, just so it´s easier for me to find
Index for the February Chaos Thread
Index for the June Chaos Thread
I wrote quite a few snippets, some of them are even quite good (I think), and I had so much fun!
In Another Life - my only One Piece fic outside of the Chaos Threads, but still heavily influenced by it.
Overall:
I wanted to do a gen/het/slash count and various other statistics, but I don´t know which snippets to count and where to put them and I really don´t want to count words for all of my snippets. Also university is teaching me lots about the unreliability of statistics.
I don´t think I have enough stories to do the "best/hardest/worst" list, but "favourite" is definitely "Brothers and Comrades in Arms". In case you couldn´t tell. *cough*
Overall I´d say I write mostly gen, with all kinds of background pairings. I like AUs and of the team I´m most comfortable writing Ronon, but probably only because I had the most practice. Writing long fics is hard.
I signed up to rec for
stargateficrec four times: Crossover/AU, Teyla, and twice for Rodney&Ronon friendship. (I have so many Rodney&Ronon fics bookmarked now!)
Sometimes it was fun, but more often it´s frustrating. Reccers hardly ever get feedback and I never knew if my short descriptions were helpful or not, and sometimes these few sentences "I like it because" are very hard to put together. I always check if the fics I rec get comments afterwards because that´s (almost) the only sort of feedback or thank-you I get. On the other hand, it feels great when someone leaves a gushing review on a fic you pointed them at.
I admire the people who sign up (for more than one category, even!) nearly each month. Thanks!
I still have some recs saved for next year, ie Rodney&Teyla friendship, and I want to do Ronon&Teyla friendship but it´s very hard to find.
For next year… hm.
I want to do
sga_genficathon again! I´m really looking forward to it. Fun.
I also want to finish the WIP currently occupying my brain. It´s another snippet from someone else´s ´verse and I´m stalled at the moment because it´s getting more serious than I thought. It´s from Elizabeth´s POV (which was quite a surprise) – I should probably watch more season 1 episodes…
Get more fics beta´d. This year it was only two and both stories profited immensely.
I want to try to write a couple of kinkmeme prompts. 1) some of them are fun, 2) you make the requester happy, 3) they´re good exercise. I´ll probably write mostly not-so-explicit ones, but who knows? I certainly didn´t expect to write the fills I did this year.
I could do a few short follow-up stories to "Brothers and Comrades in Arms" because I still love it and occasionally have it floating around in my head, but nothing immediately comes to mind.
Writing German stories again would be great. I´m afraid I´m getting out of practice.
Basically, I want to have fun writing. That´s the most important part.
Just for fun, what I read this year: Lots. Mostly SGA fanfic, a bit of A:tla, some Sherlock, miscellaneous others. I still like gen friendship fantasy AUs best, but I´m really not picky. And I have a huge pile of comfort fic.
I should probably organize my bookmarks better. They´re not so much "bookmarks" as "a giant Word document (14 pages) with a few categories". Amazingly I can find stuff. Um. Sometimes?
I still have the same favourite authors I had last year; the good thing is that they´re still as good, but no new discoveries. But new good fic! And I can read old fic I hardly remember anymore, that´s nice, too. I still didn´t reread "The Eledgias" - it´s the fic that made me fall in love with fandom years ago and I don´t want to know if it´s not as good as I remember.
I really should polish the snippets and put them up on my journal. Too lazy now, maybe later.
Wow, this got longer than I thought.

Date: 2011-01-04 07:27 pm (UTC)I´m not that new to writing in general, just to fanfic. Easier in some ways, harder in others, but I´m afraid I got addicted to having an audience. ;-)
