schneefinkToday I had a great story idea (at least it seems that way to me). I don´t have the time to write it now (and knowing me it´s very likely that I never will), but I don´t want to forget it, so here, have some notes:
I want to write a SGA/Bartimaeus fusion where Teyla is a shaman and John, Rodney and Ronon are her spirit companions.
It starts with the Earth expedition coming to Athos. The expedition consists of wizards and commoners, and even though they work together by now and have a shared government, wizards are still arrogant and believe they can do everything better. They think that the Athosians don´t have wizards and immediately feel superior. Only then one of their demons activates a Wraith trap and the Wraith come.
The Wraith queens are wizards, as the Earth people say. They summon the drones and other nasty things. Male Wraith can only summon smaller demons for smaller spells. The Wraith come and cull Athos and of course the Earthers are shocked that apparently there are evil wizards in Pegasus. They try to flee to Atlantis and leave the Athosians, but Teyla and the other Athosians follow to escape the Wraith.
Once in Atlantis, nobody considers a rescue mission. Instead they are worried about the Athosians betraying them to the Wraith and don´t let them go back. I haven´t decided who would be in charge of Atlantis in this scenario. Sumner, possibly, who´d be a powerful wizard and managed to escape the dart. And Elizabeth would be the commoner representative, but the power balance would be even more in Sumner´s favour. (But the soldiers are commoners, wizards are the elite, so maybe the other way round? Elizabeth as a progressive but still arrogant wizard, Sumner as a commoner?)
The Athosians might not have wizards, but they do have shamans, and Teyla is the best (but only because their head shaman died a few weeks before). She spends her time exploring, using little tricks to get away from the guards. When it becomes clear that the Athosians are little more than prisoners she calls a spirit, and because she became somewhat fascinated by the Gateships she concentrates on them and John appears.
The Gates are like very powerful amulets, btw.
John: was probably called first by the Sumerians (true name… I don´t know? But he likes John.) Quickly got a reputation as rebellious, useless, dangerous, and not worth the bother. Was left alone for the most time. Teyla´s calling is different than the wizards´ summoning he´s used to, less compulsive, and it takes three tries until he bothers to show up at all (as a black cloud.) He´s curious when he meets Teyla and less rebellious than usual because shamans don´t chain demons like wizards do. Teyla gets the impression that he´s lonely, so she sometimes calls him again.
In the meantime she thinks that the labs might be the key to find the Earthers´ weakness, both in magical theory and science, so she calls a spirit in the lab and Rodney appears.
Rodney: true name Meredith. Personal demon of Aristotle and then became something of a good luck charm to the best scientists worldwide throughout the centuries. He was, of course, smarter than all of them, but nobody took a demon seriously. Took the name Rodney because that was the name of the only wizard he ever met to have true potential, but the boy died with sixteen years of anaphylactic shock (lemons.) Last master was Kavanagh, a moron. At least Carter was smart. Kavanagh got fed up with his demon calling him an idiot and comparing him to another wizard and released him. (Kavanagh is also on Atlantis.)
Rodney appears as a giant cat, ready to rant about the incredibly sloppy binding and willing to scare the hell out of the inexperienced wizard, maybe smite him, and then disappear again, and is very confused when he meets Teyla, who asks for his help! And says he can leave if he wants to! And also – oh, science. Shiny.
Halling and the other Athosians are concerned what the Earthers might do to Teyla if they catch her. There might also be something with Teyla and Elizabeth and Sumner and other wizards and commoners and it´s all very messy and complicated.
As a gesture of good will officially and unofficially because they´re running out of food and nobody will trade with them the Earthers ask Teyla to accompany them on a trading mission. It goes well, but the next one the wizards activate another Wraith trap and suspect Teyla. (This might be the mission Ford, a sympathetic commoner probably – or a young wizard? – is killed. Or he might be another spirit Teyla calls, but only temporarily.)
A while later they meet Ronon, a spirit that´s been bound by a Wraith queen. They (trading team, I don´t know who yet) manage to kill the queen, Ronon is released and Teyla calls him to help against the drones. Some Earthers find out that Teyla is a shaman, but are killed shortly afterwards. (Completely accidentally. Or maybe one or two survive thanks to Teyla and don´t tell.) Teyla also calls John and Rodney against the Wraith because a spirit you know comes quicker; John is happy to help, Rodney complains, but fights anyway because he´s clearly much stronger than those Wraith anyway.
When Teyla is in Atlantis, John and Rodney are bored. John poses as member of the expedition and has all kinds of fun impersonating other people and screwing with the wizards´ minds. Rodney is mostly in the labs, where he´s discovered by Zelenka. Rodney knows from the time he worked with Kavanagh that Zelenka is not as moronic as most scientists, Zelenka is a commoner who has heard of Meredith, and they become friends, sort of, and have lots of fun with pranks on the wizard chief scientists (Gall?) Ronon, when he comes to Atlantis, takes a while to show himself and to trust Teyla. He distrusts the Earthers because they chain their demons, similar to the Wraith. There are also a few Earth demons, and maybe they meet Teyla´s spirits and are jealous, with Teyla can use to make them support her (covertly.) Maybe Cadman? Cadman as a demon would be fun.
I´m not sure about Beckett, but definitely human.
Teyla is still working on a way to free the Athosians, but the Gate is very well guarded. She tries to ally with the commoners against the wizards, but it doesn´t appear to work because they don´t trust her. And she becomes not-quite-friends with some Earthers, commoners and even some wizards, so she doesn´t want to do them permanent harm.
And then it could go many ways: Teyla escapes, meets with other Pegasus shamans and they try to take over Atlantis. Or she does manage to convince the commoners, there´s a coup and they let the Athosians go. Or, my favourite, Teyla and the Athosians take over Atlantis. Go, Teyla!
It would be mostly Teyla POV, probably with one section each for John, Rodney and Ronon. And long. I definitely don´t have time for this now, but maybe later, when I don´t have so much to do. (So not until September…) But I like the idea :)

That said, I´m glad you think it sounds good! Thanks for the links to the bunny adopting comms, too, even if most of them aren´t very active (and I really don´t need additional bunnies right now *eyes exam plan*). I should not have read that last one before going to bed.
