Snippets of con.txt

Saturday was con.txt, and it was a lot of fun. I only found out about it last minute (well I'd heard about it before but somehow never made the actual connection that this was an event I could participate in, not until DD told me about it.)
I actually only caught very little of it. I wanted to watch the "Financial Crimes for Fun and Profit" panel (by caorann and celli), but my connection was bad so it kept freezing and throwing me out every few moments. I thought about switching to the other room where DD was watching "Canon, Fanon, Fever Dream" (by corbae and marina) because I kept hearing her laugh, but didn't in the end; though I was happy to hear that apparently multiple people guessed wrong about my TMA submission "A giant crab lives beneath the Archives." (Why no cloning *sighs*)
Then for the second panel I persuaded DD to watch it with me, so I got to see the entire thing without interruptions: "Werewolf Torts and Undead Annuities III", by alpheratz and v. greyson. It was great :D
Some notes:
- What happens if I sell my soul twice? And can I get interest on my soul, and other interesting questions (answer: some of it depends on if you can convince a judge that a soul is a commonly used payment – and does that then mean there is danger of soul laundering?)
- A question in chat that I was very sad they didn't get around to: if I control my employees with a geas, would it be GAAP-compliant to activate them as assets?
- Several questions about inheritance from vampires (i.e. when a vampire dies its ultimate death, do vampires sired have the same rights to the estate as children sired while living?), most of them depending on the question if "undead" counts as living or not
- a question about how the GDPR applies to information gained by scrying – the answer mostly involved clarifying who the GDPR already does/doesn't apply to, but boiled down to "generally, yes," and local laws are also important. Somehow this led to the conclusion that Fleur Delacour could sue Hogwarts but Lupin can't, though I have to admit I forgot the exact context for that.
- Related: how is the EU defined with potential additional planes involved?, which the mods refused to answer since defining the EU is difficult enough on our material plane
- A question about the moon colonies and taxation, which led to discussions if werewolves can claim ownership of the moon by pissing on it, and if piss would actually land on the moon or float away. Also an appeal to eat the werewolf landlords for some reason.
- A question about jurisdiction if a zombie's individual body parts are strewn across various countries, which boiled to "which part of the corpse is making the claim?" Maybe the torso is flexing in morse code.
- A question about if communication with your god is privileged communication – the answer started with "We will assume that god is not a lawyer," and of course there were follow-up question about what if god is your spouse, or your doctor
- A question about health insurance of resurrected spouses, which incidentally led to the statement that practicing demonic cultivation probably puts you into a higher risk category, the question of who would even insure the Burial Mounds, and the true statement that WWX has no working risk assessment. Also, if you live near the Burial Mounds, zombies are probably treated the same as floods in coastal regions.
- Wei Wuxian, sexiest nuisance (not an attractive nuisance because he's mobile)
- Vampires could demand to be put on night shift at their jobs
- What if you make a deal involving the wording "a year and a day" but you're in space, how long is that?
- Can you be sued for the crime your sentient cat (not naming any names hereDa Qing) commits? First of all, if you own a sentient cat that's slavery…
Apparently this is a regular panel, which makes sense because it is brilliant. (I found notes by
bironic for the 2014 panel here.)
Then I left to play D&D, and I came back in time to try and watch the "I, Murderbot" panel (by everyfragment, la_dissonance & v. greyson) but again the connection was bad and I missed more than half of it. Uugh I really need to figure out my internet problems.
So now the plan is to read through all the Discord chats, all the recs etc. - I'll have plenty of time if I keep procrastinating like this ^^

Date: 2020-07-27 09:47 pm (UTC)(Now I'm starting to think about the application of my profession to various possible canon issues as well. Lan Qiren, we will be happy to take on the translation of your clan rules, but please bear in mind that most languages take up more space in terms of character count than Chinese does, particularly classical Chinese, and you're gonna need a bigger wall...).

Date: 2020-07-28 03:27 pm (UTC)As I recall, the context was:
-EU privacy law and the right to be forgotten
-suing organizations for privacy protection reasons
-Lupin could sue Snape/Hogwarts for telling people he's a werewolf
-but Brexit
-so after Brexit, Lupin isn't an EU citizen and can't sue Hogwarts under EU law
-Fleur remains an EU citizen and can sue them
