Things I read/watched
Jan. 29th, 2014 09:25 pmSome things I have recently read/watched, all with some spoilers:
Dogma (1999): I watched the movie because of a Tumblr rec. I enjoyed the religion jokes, the friendships etc., but most of all enjoyed watching a movie with a clearly depressed main character that does not somehow snap out of it. It's not a big deal, it just is. And she seems on the road to get better, but it's not sure.
The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green: TFiOS was a Christmas present. I knew it was supposed to be sad, but I thought I was prepared because I already knew who was going to die. Nope. It wasn't even his death that caught me, it was Hazel's conversation with her parents. I read it on December 31st and had to call friends to cheer me up so that New Year's wasn't ruined, and I still needed an hour to get it together.
Worm, original fiction: I really loved the first half/two thirds of this. Then the new characters were sloppily introduced, there were too many action scenes and it got veeery long. It's a first draft, but the worldbuilding was well done and I enjoyed it.
SPECIFIC SPOILERS: There are some plot snippets that are still not explained (why did Dinah tell Taylor to cut ties? Which question did she even ask before she gave her the notes? What happened with Noelle? Why did killing Dragon influence the chances of Jack contacting Sion?), though to their credit others were wrapped up very well.
I think killing Regent was a bit of a cop-out. Sure, it worked well for Imp's story arc, but it also meant that Taylor didn't have to deal with her moral issues of having him on the Undersiders again. I loved that Tattletale, whose superpower is "intuition", is shown to be one of the most powerful figures, with the exception of Contessa and a few others. She doesn't seem dangerous and then she rips you apart. I also liked that Rachel never had to be 'cured', she's just different. I loved that there was a lot of politics involved in the take-over of the city and the organization of the heroes etc. Dragon and Defiant were great. I enjoyed Skitter figuring out the different uses of her powers and taking out "stronger" ones. I liked the interludes, especially the online message boards. Bonesaw is scary; so is Amy, in a way.
Teen Wolf, season "3b": I'm enjoying this season so far! Okay, so far they could just do set-up so the plot might still not make any sense, but so far it's been a good mix of funny and suspense and sweet. I'm looking forward to the next episode.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 1: It took me years until I started watching the show, because even though many people recommended it the first thing I found online were "it's not that feminist" posts with a lot of criticism that put me off because I didn't know the context. And then it took me months to get through the first few episodes: they weren't interesting and had a lot of stuff I didn't like (like Xander, heh.) But starting from 1x9 "The Puppet Show" the episodes got a lot better imo, and the season finale, "Prophecy Girl", was great.
"Giles, I'm sixteen. I don't wanna die." *hugs Buffy*
I love Buffy, I've started to care about Giles, Willow is okay, I can at least see the potential for Xander to become less of a douche in the future, Angel is much better when he's, uh, not there most of the time, and Cordelia's becoming more interesting.
(Actually I'd love to see a comparison between Cordelia and Lydia. Because at this point, the main difference I see is that Lydia is, and knows that she is, secretly a genius. That gives her several options that Cordelia doesn't have. Otherwise they're similar in a lot of ways. Of course I've only seen s1 Cordelia so far.)
