The Young Protectors

Someone on Tumblr was asking for recs for LGBTQ-friendly comics and one mentioned was The Young Protectors (very imaginative name...) I read it this evening and enjoyed it a lot.
I like the characters and their relationships with each other, what little we so far saw of the world, the plot so far, and the art is nice, too. At first I was very skeptical about some aspects, but there's a big plot twist (that I saw coming but not the shape it took) that was the moment the comic went from something I read one evening because I was bored to something that I'm very interested in and want to see a lot more of.
The comic updates 1-2 times weekly. It took me about two hours to read the archive, so it's a nice length but not too long yet, and there's a lot more to come :)
(No fic on AO3 yet, bäh.)
Kyle/Annihilator is something that only works in porn. 17-year-old superhero and 58-year-old supervillain? That would be a terrible relationship. The prologue worked as Duncan messing with him, and then fortunately we got more concrete hints that Duncan had ulterior motives soon, otherwise I probably wouldn't have continued. It was a disaster waiting to happen, and as I was reading I already felt sorry for Kyle for what was going to happen. His fear about his friends and the public finding out that he's gay was shown very clearly (oh Kyle :( ), and that the relief of the idea that there's finally a small space where he doesn't have to hide is so tempting is no surprise, and made his naivete a bit more understandable. And then the betrayal :( Poor Kyle, pretty much his worst nightmare came true. Except that he still has his friends. This is the point in the story where the naive hero grows up and becomes stronger than before :)
(I still enjoyed the pages where he's tied down naked on the bed with flames all around him, so sue me.)
But I loved what happened next! Paul's and Spooky's reactions were great, especially Spooky's pep talk + hug. And I liked that Kyle was honest with them instead of pretending the Annihilator caught him in some other way.
I liked that we got to see Amanda and Spooky meet and that it explains why Spooky stays with the team. I'm very interested in Mitch and am looking forward to seeing more of him. I like that Paul is confronting Tsunami about his attitude.
I really hope that Kyle/Duncan is not the endpairing, I can't imagine any scenario in which that would work. It's clear that Duncan developed a fondness for Kyle, and I do think that Kyle probably has trouble completely hating him despite everything, but it would be a terrible thing for Kyle.
Actually I think at the moment I'd prefer for Kyle to stay single in the end but be open for a new relationship. Given that it's a yaoi comic I'm not sure how likely that is, but I can hope. And so far I don't have a reason to distrust the author.
(Mitch having a crush on Kyle would be cute. And not that unlikely, I think. Mitch is only 15, but idk, sometime in the future it could work? I wonder why Mitch wasn't accepted in the internship program, or Paul.)
And I'm looking forward to seeing how the whole "prince of hell" thing is going to work out for Kyle.
