Ghost Story arrived today. After reading all the Dresden Files books from the library and then squeeing over Small Favor to Changes with LB, I couldn't not order Ghost Story.

I loved it! I think it might be my favorite book of the series, together with Small Favors. Mort! Butters! Poor Murphy and Molly. And everyone else in Chicago. Whoa, Harry. This is worse than it's ever been before, I think? Almost felt like apocafic. Scratch the almost. If it's that bad in the US, how bad must it be in South America?

Wow, I think I can talk a lot about this book.

Molly: Ouch, Molly. Hunted by the White Council and "tutored" by Lea, distrusted by pretty much everyone... What about Charity and Michael? I can't believe they wouldn't do everything in their power to help her. She seems to have cut ties with Daniel, at least, but I can't believe Charity or Michael would give up on her like that. Even though they're caring for Maggie now (loved that, and their angel guardians.)
I never even thought about how much Chichen Itzá must have messed her up, and then arranging Harry's murder, too. Bit optimistic to think Eb would take her in, Harry!
From an outside perspective, I love her much more as a character now, but I really, really hope she gets a happy ending. I wonder what's going to happen to her now? Impossible to say without knowing what Harry is going to do as Winter Knight. She sure has become powerful.

Murphy: Poor Murphy. No one she can rely on, feeling guilty, a lot of responsibility on her shoulders, and so many dead. No wonder she became harder. And once she finds out Harry used Molly and Kincaid to kill himself, and no-one told her, she's going to be so mad, and rightfully so. I want a happy ending for her, too :(

Mort: Mort was awesome. Thumbs up, Jim Butcher, for developing him from a vaguely annoying coward into a strong and likeable character that I hope will show up much more often.
And how ironic is it that, only pages after Harry finally stops to think about his actions, Mort tells him that he's been an idiot again? Mort doesn't really have any reason to trust Harry, does he. And now Sir Stuart is gone (Mort could probably still summon him, but it wouldn't be the same), as are most of his "regular" house ghosts. I hope he'll be part of the Alliance of Chicago.

Butters! Giving him Bob was a stroke of genius. Like Mort, Butters was developed wonderfully here. And if Bob comes back from his fight with Evil Bob, Butters might even keep him during Harry's time as Winter Knight. Of course Internet access is the solution to Bob's craving for porn! Go, Butters, calling the others on their hypocrisy in not asking Marcone for help. It would be totally unprecedented, indeed.
I hope Bob is alright. I'm glad he's not evil! Evil Bob is scary. Though I'm kind of puzzled by the explanation why they're almost equally strong: a hundred years, fine, but Bob has much more than that. Bob's apartment and Bob in human form, fun.

The Chicago Alliance - love! Finally the Paranet gets all the spotlight. And of course Marcone as the Baron, protecting his city. I'm sure there must have been a White Council delegate to Marcone - probably Ramirez - and a very polite exchange of words. And a Marcone-Murphy confrontation. Now I want to see Murphy&Hendricks&Gard scenes, plotting how best to protect the city.

I can imagine Thomas moping, but for six months? Surely Justine would have done something sooner, or Lara, he would have stopped himself. Six months is a long time to be doing nothing. Huh.

I liked the flashbacks. Poor Harry and Elaine, no wonder they have Issues.

What is the White Council doing? The last we saw of them they were pretty disorganized, but I expect Eb returned after the battle in Changes and cleaned up, together with Injun Joe, and also freed Luccio. Still, I bet there's still a lot of tension in the air. Now that Harry is dead the probably still haven't stopped fighting about him.

I wonder how much Ivy knows about what's happening...

The ending! Did not see that coming, though it made a lot of sense. Poor Harry: Mab and Demonreach and Uriel scheming around him. Harry's first appearance as the Winter Knight after this will be spectacular, to say the least.

Uriel found a nice loophole, but now I have to wonder what Harry would have done without the Fallen whispering to him. If he hadn't made the deal with Mab, what could/would he have done? If he hadn't been there and the Reds had succeeded in the ritual... Not good. In the long term, the White Council would have lost the war for sure without Eb and Harry. Another power vacuum.

So many questions open. So the Fomor will probably become the next bad guys, together with the Black Council. I guess we'll be seeing a lot of Fix, Lily, Maeve and the other Fae in the next book, and I do hope there'll be more Thomas. Lea, of course - I do appreciate her scary Blue and Orange Morality thing, as a reader, from a safe distance. I'm sure Fitz will show up again, but I don't know how soon. Maybe he'll become Mort's apprentice? Molly and Murphy will be there, of course, and hopefully Butters. There could be more of Marcone, and Childs, but it depends on how much the Winter Knight will be allowed to involve himself in mortal affairs. What are Mab's immediate goals?

One year until the next book, hmph. That's the downside of reading books when they come out. On the other hand, now I can enjoy everyone else's squee in realtime!

This book was full of awesome stuff! I gotta admit I was really disappointed in Thomas, glooming in his man-cave for six months while everyone else is out there risking their butts on the streets of Chicago. Way to be useless, Thomas! But everyone else kicked ass and took names. I absolutely loved how this book took most of the heavy hitters out of the picture, and gave the ordinary humans and small-time practitioners a chance to shine. And Molly is really coming into her own, both as a wizard and a character; a lot of times in long-running series, it's pretty common for the kids of the main characters to be pretty "blah" as characters (either knockoff copies of their parents, or just very bland without much going for them) and I'm so glad that Molly has emerged as a full-fledged character in her own right from almost her first appearance.

I can't wait for the next book!

Yeah, the power vacuum was definitely visible. It was nice to see the effect Harry's presence had on Chicago - or maybe not so nice, now that he's gone. I wonder how much he'll be able to protect Chicago as the Winter Knight? And it's good to see the "ordinary humans" fight for themselves, although none of the people we saw are exactly ordinary. Even Butters has Bob, and at least they all know what's going on and where/who their allies are. The "normal" people of Chicago must be really frightened, and apparently Chicago is still safer than some other cities...

When we got to see Thomas I almost thought it was a trip into the past, to show Harry what had happened and that Thomas was fine. Because really, six months? I hope we find out that something else happened in the meantime, otherwise I've lost a lot of respect for him. He did just fine without Harry for years. When he gets back to normal I hope Murphy is going to chew him out for that.

I have to admit the way Molly was handled was really starting to annoy me in the last few books. How many descriptions of her beauty and her crush on Harry did we get? But here she definitely outgrew that. Go, Molly!

Don't remind me of the wait :( For me it's the first time I have to wait for a new DF book instead of simply deciding not to buy it just yet, and it's haaard.
