Christmas

Christmas! I can sit here in my pajamas, Christmas cookies next to me, my head full of (mostly Christmas) songs, and read Yuletide stories :) That's almost all I did yesterday (and church music and delicious food and card games), it was fantastic.

I got an amazing story for Yuletide!
The Pivot (1678 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] salable_mystic
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply, but depression and a suicide attempt
Summary: Gregor Vorbarra is 26 when he decides that jumping off a balcony is how he will best serve Barrayar.

It's a very intense story. In a good way, just be prepared for majorly depressive thoughts.

I also got a lovely Madness treat! At Home (100 words) by [archiveofourown.org profile] elstaplador
Fandom: Galaxy Quest (1999)
Summary: Laliari tries to get her head around this alien concept of 'acting'.

And I got some comments&kudos on my fics already :)

I have a long list of stories to rec and many tabs open for stories yet to read that I'll hopefully get around to in the next few days. There's some minor stuff I have to do, a friend will be staying over for a few days, and then I'm visiting family for New Year's. I'll most likely do the rest of the December meme questions in January.

Yuletide fic: posted yesterday. I have to resist the temptation to go back and edit heavily, because I'm pretty sure it's as good as I can make it and I'd just make myself more nervous. I don't like this waiting for reveals thing.

Other than that I don't have any Christmas presents at all :( And only a few ideas. I'm starting to feel guilty and panicky, ugh. Let's hope I find something in the next three days.

For the December meme, a question by [personal profile] dhampyresa: Tell me about being Austrian in fandom. There's got to be a couple of things that trip you up, right?

Not so much anymore. The biggest difference was when I entered English-speaking fandom and suddenly there were so many different cultures represented that I wasn't at all familiar with.

When I found online fandom I spent some time in German-speaking anime fandom, where everyone wrote about Japanese highschools and they were exactly like German ones. Highschool AUs in English-speaking fandom were very strange: the years don't make sense, there are a bunch of stereotypes used that I was unfamiliar with, and why are they so worried about going to uni anyway? But I've learned a lot by now, especially about the US but also about other countries, and it's become easier.

Specifically Austrian things specifically in fandom, hmm, nothing really comes to mind. I still get extremely excited whenever Austria or something associated with it is mentioned in canon or fic, and I wish I knew more about Vienna so I could set an urban fantasy story here. (There's probably a lot of death magic in Vienna. We sing about graveyards a lot. If I had to pick a couple of things that Viennese magic centers around, it's probably music and death, with some strong Balkan influences.)

Yuletide deadline is in two weeks! I have a first draft, but haven't touched it in a week. I don't like editing -.-

Yesterday the Pens had an afternoon game, so D. and I watched it live! With some connection problems, that was annoying, but we had pizza. And they won, despite all the injuries, which is nice :)

For the December meme, a question by [personal profile] kate: Do you write things you want to read, or do you read things that are different from what you write? Any tropes/premises/worlds that are favorites, in reading and/or in writing?

Both.

I'll read pretty much anything if it's well done, tropes/pairings/fandoms, and I've discovered many great things by following recs or authors I know into the unknown.

Favorite tropes to read: many, and it depends on the fandom. Sometimes I like harlequin fic, sometimes I prefer trope subversion. I like alternate history AUs and different world AUs a lot (mundane AUs less, but they can also be written very well.) I like stories that center around close-knit communities, like teamfic.

I read a ton of things I haven't written yet, but that I might write in the future. I have many more ideas for stories than I actually end up writing, sometimes because of time or energy and sometimes because I think I'm not good enough to write it yet. For example porn: I enjoy reading explicit fic (if the sex scene has a purpose in the story), but I don't like writing sex scenes because I don't think I'm good at them (yet.)

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here, but because it fits right now: I'm extremely thankful that I'm lucky enough to live in a place and be in a position where I feel safe and can be confident that the authorities will treat me fairly, and my loved ones. Otherwise it would be fucking terrifying. Best wishes to everyone who has to face that.

I finished the rough first draft of my Yuletide fic! I even already got first impressions back, so now it's editing time. Every time I'm happy I have a first draft done I forget how much work editing is.

To celebrate, have some fic recs. 3 Hockey RPF:

i know who i want to take me home by [archiveofourown.org profile] electrumqueen
Sam Gagner/John Tavares & Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews, 23k, PG13
Summary: "Wait," Kaner says. Something strange and terrifying flickers through his voice. "Gags, are you saying it's you for Jonny?"
Why I love it: I just call it the Oilers!Toews fic. Yes, it's exactly as cracky as that sounds, and much more hilarious. Apparently not everyone in fandom knows this one and they really should. (Bonus points to Nealer for best guest appearance.)

only the game fish swims upstream by [archiveofourown.org profile] TheDukeofAvon
Tyler Bozak/Phil Kessel, 10k, PG13
Summary: Twitter suspects they've broken up, Bozie and You Can Play are mortal enemies, and they're probably going to miss the playoffs again, but other than that it's going great.
Why I love it: A great take on accidental outing. Phil is a great PoV character in this, with his known love for the media, his calm, and his idle murderous thoughts about Carlyle. I really liked his and Bozie's relationship, and the rest of the Leafs.

I could be wrong, I could be ready by [archiveofourown.org profile] 12ways
Alex Galchenyuk/Brendan Gallagher, 45k, PG13
Summary: In which the internet finds some photos from the WJC '13 celebrations that change Alex's life forever, and he and Brendan find out quickly exactly how gullible and reactionary people can be. Things escalate. Feelings and shenanigans ensue.
Why I love it: Accidental outing with bonus fake dating, both very well done. I like both main characters, especially Alex and how he learns to deal with stuff, and the supporting cast is great.

Today I was finally smart enough to take painkillers against my weather-induced headaches. I don't know for sure where I got my aversion to non-prescribed medicine, but sometimes it's really annoying.

I wrote over 500 words of Yuletide fic! And that's with constantly editing it because I wasn't happy. (Current step: try to make long sections of narration seem less boring by adding a few lines of dialogue.)
I have almost 1k words, and I'm not even a quarter through my outline. But it's a detailed outline, so I think I'll be okay.

(Still a tiny bit concerned that it's not my recipient's favorite fandom. Oh well.)

The downside of writing Yuletide fic, it makes me feel like I've accomplished something even when I'm brilliantly procrastinating on uni stuff.

I'm also working on progressing from "eat three meals a day" (took me long enough) to "eating something when I'm hungry." Small steps.

I'm currently procrastinating on going to sleep, I thought I was over that.

Hi! Thank you very much for writing a story for me!

Some things I like:
* I love friendship/team fic. Characters who grow to like each other, trust each other, and eventually would do many things for each other, yes please. Especially when in the beginning they're in slightly different positions/places/etc. and their friendship is rather unexpected.
* Related to that, navigating relationships. Could be platonic or romantic partners: how do they deal with daily life, how do they solve conflicts, how do they support and comfort each other at the end of the day?
* Worldbuilding! How do things work? Both on a large scale and the mundane details. I love to learn about a world's politics, economics, cultural details, even administration and bureaucracy.
* Plot is great. Stories where they stay at home and play boardgames are also great. 5-things/times-fic is fun. I like stories that span an hour and stories that span years.

Things I don't like for Yuletide:
* Stories with an unhappy ending. Some unhappy elements are fine if the general outlook is optimistic, but nothing extremely dark, please (torture, rape, abuse…)
* Stories focused on explicit sex
* Complete AUs, i.e. coffeeshop AU etc. I love the canon worlds of all these fandoms so I'd prefer to read fic taking place there. Canon-divergent AUs are fine, or canon-with-small-details-changed.

Have fun! The prompts below are just guidelines, I hope they help you think of ideas.

I'm tiiired and I'm procrastinating on going to sleep because my brain is being weird, so have a post full of random things.

Why are people posting Yuletide letters already? It's not a bad idea to start writing them especially if you know that you won't have much time next week, but it's making me feel stressed. I wanted to rewatch Galaxy Quest, finish reading "Barrayar", and go through the tag set to see if I've missed anything... oh well, still some time left.
(A friend got me a copy of Galaxy Quest but in such a high resolution that my laptop doesn't want to play it properly. I really need to declutter it soon.)
I looked through nominations and I was very happy to find some things that had been accepted, & I know what I hope I'll be matched on! Fandoms where I don't want any particular stories myself but would be happy to write one.

I did not stay up to watch the Pens game against Dallas, which was good because Duper :( But he's back on his feet! I watched the new In the Room and grinned broadly the whole time. This team. Olli and Kappy! Sid and Duper! Suttsy and Kuni discussing D-pairings and calling Despres "Desi"! (Did they assume Scuds would play top4? Ahaha Olli is sooo much better.) Suttsy and Duper mic'd!
Islanders tomorrow, I won't watch it live either but afterwards. It'd be fantastic to break the Isles' streak.
(Btw the Oilers are so bad, if they get McDavid it would be terrible and hilarious.)

Today was the first day of a two-day "voice and movement" workshop at uni. Six hours today, seven tomorrow. Sooo tired. But it was ok, some of it very interesting. Debating taught me not to be afraid of speaking to people and to stand comfortably, singing taught me breathing, but presentations and making contact with the audience is something I have less practice in.
I was told several times that I look very strict, huh. I thought I was not smiling but still friendly.

The whole week I was looking forward to watching Bab5 yesterday, but then another friend came to visit too so we watched Star Wars 3 instead (I tried not to look too unhappy about it.) Wow does that movie have a lot of pretty cloud backgrounds and dramatic face shots and people being stupid (also the Jedi philosophy is still very weird.)
I also got LK's excellent salad recipe (completely different from how we usually make salad at home) that I'm looking forward to trying out.

I'm not very happy with the progress I made on my thesis this week, but at least I got my phone repaired and met my new Russian conversation partner. He seems nice, I'm looking forward to it.

There are some things I should get done for debating and some other things that I'm not feeling up to right now, but whatever.

Yuletide nominations are open! This time, I'm telling myself the third year in a row, is definitely the year I'll participate in Yuletide for the first time. I guess we'll see :)
I think I even understand the rules, more or less, and I know that there are enough fandoms that I could offer.

I'm still thinking about what I want to request, especially what I'd need to nominate. Most things that I currently follow are either bigger fandoms or I'm not that interested in fic.
*) Vorkosigan Saga: Greg, Aral, and Miles, probably. And maybe Ivan. I think I'd like a fic set between Barrayar and Vor Game. I'm pretty sure I don't have to nominate this, but so far it's not on the unofficial spreadsheet.
*) The Young Protectors: I want worldbuilding (will probably be jossed, but who cares) and teamfic. Stupid character limit. Four of Kyle, Paul, Mitch, Spooky, and Amanda... (I hope the comic progresses in a way that next year I can request Platinum Priestess/Amanda rivalry fic.)
*) Montréal Canadiens RPF: Teamfic! Poly is also good. Gally, Chucky, PK, and then either Prust or Price or Scherbak. Probably Scherbak, he's adorable.
* I know that Penguins RPF (magical realism teamfic would be nice, for example) is already nominated. I might perhaps request Galaxy Quest (Laliari post-movie), and I'm sure the list will give me more ideas. I feel like I'm forgetting something, which is probably normal but annoying... Oh well, I still have time until Monday.

Recently I'm getting kudos every third day or so, which is nice. But sometimes I really wonder how people found that particular story. Especially my SGA stories, because all my other ones have one or two tags people might search for. But short older random SGA fic? Sometimes it's a reminder that I even wrote that stuff. It's always great :)

Recently I'm also trying to leave more comments. After one very sincere thank-you I thought I should try more because it makes people happy, and I resolved to start with one a day. (I'm not sure how many fics I read each day on average, I'm pretty sure it's more than ten.) I'm above that now, and I think I'm getting better at it. It's nice.

Third day in a row of not doing any work on my thesis... Better tomorrow. (We had a debating workshop at a school, I have too many unread emails, there's debate club drama going on, and I get random headaches. I think tomorrow I'm going to steal some chocolate from the cupboard.)

Music I'm currently listening to on a loop: Calling All Dawns

I haven't been as enthusiastic about One Piece recently. I'm not sure if it's because the last two arcs are not that good or if they're just not as good as Marinford. In the latter case, it will be very hard to make anything as amazing as Marinford again. But I really enjoyed the most recent chapter!
Spoilers for chapter 698 )

And before I forget: Have some very late Yuletide recs.

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time, by fennellaevangela
The Bloggess tries her hand at running a kitten livestream.
"The Bloggess" fanfic, whee! I hadn't dared hope someone would ask for it. A series of blog posts that could have happened just like that.
Btw, I got the Bloggess' book "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" for Christmas and I started laughing when I read the chapter titles. It's also a very warm book about living your life differently, and I enjoyed it very much.

On Being Female, by Nomad
Discworld: It began, as did so many bewilderments small and large, with a declaration by Captain Carrot.
This fic, in which Carrot is a member of the Dwarf Women's Guild, has great Vimes and Carrot voices. I love how it approaches the female dwarves and societal change, and it's also very funny.

Perigee, by radondoran
Isaac Asimo's Robots: The Universe's most boring assignment becomes a lot more interesting.
This is a very good Powell&Donovan adventures-with-robots story, with an interesting robot, a solid adventure, and Susan Calvin. (Susan %"§$&$"%/& Calvin, I love her so much. That reminds me, has anyone written Susan Calvin meeting Granny Weatherwax?) The romance wasn't necessary imo, but it was barely there and didn't distract at all.

The Emissary, by Beth Winter
Spirited Away: The construction of a new power line across a mountain range has stalled due to unexplained accidents. The woman inspector from Tokyo says that her job is to make sure the work is done in harmony with nature. Ogino Chihiro has a mystery to uncover and a mission to undertake.
This is probably my favorite Spirited Away futurefic I have found. It shows how modern humans and the spirit world can live together in peace, and how Chihiro might find her way between both worlds to help them. I also like the outsider POV.

I haven't seen enough recs for some of the amazing Yuletide stories I found, so to help you find them:

Aliens
With One Eye Open
She's still waiting, but she'll be damned if that's all she's going to do.
How it should have ended.

Aida
Foreigners
Amneris does not always know what she wants.
A fantastic look at Amneris and the race issue in Aida and Egypt at that time.

Discworld
China In Your Hand
Tiffany had given her a china shepherdess.
Granny Aching, her granddaughter, and the magic of finding beauty.

Hen Party
Tiffany was beginning to regret ever asking Nanny Ogg to be involved in preparations for her impending marriage to Preston.
Perfect character voices for Tiffany, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny, and all the witches.

Ronia the Robber's Daughter
Inflammable Substances
On the fifteenth winter of Ronia and Birk’s lives, Undis’ prediction is finally coming true.
I don't remember much of that book, but even without this is a beautiful story about growing up and falling in love.

Hebrew Bible
She Will Place on Your Head a Graceful Garland; She Will Bestow on You a Beautiful Crown
King's wives; king's sons.
An amazing story about Bathseba, Abigail, and King David's harem.

Hansel and Gretel
lovely, dark, and deep
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep— and well-protected. There shouldn't be anyone living there, and Gretel had learned enough from her mother to know not to trust mysterious lights in the forest.
This is one of the stories that reminds you of the dark and scary core at the heart of fairy tales.

Avengers
Pigeonville,USA.
Day 214 on the campaign trail of Steve Rogers for President. Twenty-sixteen's turning out to be a hell of a year.
Something light and funny, with great character voices (Coulson!)

Michael Fassbender With Pugs
Owned
It was quite unusual, really, that Pugsley had made a Tumblr in the first place. What came after that was just downright weird.
Adorable crack.

My little brother is here! I probably won't be online much in the next few days. :)
