My dream next Young Avengers series
Dec. 2nd, 2014 01:16 pmFor the December meme, a question by
sholio: If Marvel does another Young Avengers series, what would you like to see in it?
"The adventures of Eli and Tommy, with guest appearances by the other Young Avengers."
Eli and Tommy were not only two of my favorite Young Avengers after v1 and Children's Crusade (together with Teddy and Billy, Kate, a lot of regret about Cassie – okay all of them. Except maybe Jonas. Sorry Jonas), but also two of the most interesting. I was very disappointed that in v2 Eli appeared not at all (which doesn't make any sense in-universe) and Tommy barely.
When we left Eli, he's disappointed in himself, doesn't want his mistakes to hurt anyone else ever again, and goes back to live with his mom in Scottsdale. All we know after that is that he got sick during v2#6 and spent two weeks in bed (apparently his version of the super-soldier serum doesn't prevent that.)
What I want to happen: I want Eli to concentrate on his family and school, and being really good in school. I can see him concentrating on history and/or political sciences, plus anything to do with superheroes. After a while where he blocks it out completely, he starts to think a lot about superheroes, their importance and role and responsibilities. It's not that he specifically wants to get back to it, but he wants to help people; he's just not convinced that being a superhero is the best way he could do that. He becomes involved in all sorts of social activism: he's smart, outspoken, and not afraid. Eventually he starts to partly forgive himself for his past mistakes. Occasionally he still talks to his friends on the YA, but he's officially retired and they're not quite sure how to deal with it. (On his side he's also not quite sure how he feels about the rest of the team being active again.)
Nobody knows, but he also has Steve Roger's phone number. A few times he even called.
Tommy at the end of CC is the one who wants to keep the team together, who says that they can't give up the fight. He stays with the Kaplans for a while during Billy's depression, but eventually leaves. In v2 we see that he got job (or different ones) that use his superspeed, saves money, goes traveling, does "a little hero-time", and repeat. He doesn't seem very happy with it, but for the moment it works. (He also mentions that he expected – maybe still expects? – to get into problem with the law for his past. I loved that they brought that up, because the YA did break him out of prison.) We heard a bit more about his powers: a few minutes to "snails" seem like weeks to him. But presumably he can turn that sort of perception on and off.
Not!Patriot makes him disappear, then at the end of v2 he appears again and immediately seems in a good mood and goes dancing. (Shock and/or amnesia, imo.)
I want to see more of Tommy finding his place in the world. He went from being experimented on in prison to being a member of a teenage superhero team, that while I love them wasn't exactly equipped to deal with that so he tried to cope however. Civil War etc. probably hit him differently than other team members because of his background. He never really had a place he belonged to, especially after the YA disbanded. And even among the YA he always stood apart a little.
I want to see more of Tommy with his non-YA friends, like Molly. He has superspeed, he could visit them whenever.
It would also be cool to explore Tommy's powers more. A prophecy said both of Wanda's children would be crazy powerful: it's obvious with Billy, but not so with Tommy. I'm sure there's a lot more he can do that we haven't seen yet.
In v2 Tommy calls Eli his friend, has his family's phone number, and is pissed someone would steal Eli's uniform. He also complains that Eli was always too serious (while talking to David Alleyne, not sure how different he is in that regard...)
I'd love to see Tommy and Eli work together. They'd fight a lot, but not mean-spiritedly, and I can see them inspiring each other in good ways. Eventually they'll probably even enjoy each other's company!
How it could happen: maybe there's something happening in Scottsdale that makes Eli feel like he has to deal with it as Patriot, and Tommy hears about it and comes visit. Maybe Tommy wants some company and goes to visit Eli because everyone else is more stressful right then. Maybe Tommy is in trouble and the rest of the team is busy (in space on a trip with America or something), so Eli goes to help. (Maybe David contacts him because Tommy talked about Eli?)
And then they adventures together, probably connected to one big case so you don't have to find reasons to bring them together each time. They become closer friends and both of them figure out more about what they want to do with their future.
In the background I want a mention that Billy actually gets magic training, because that's been bugging me for a long time. If you have a crazy powerful junior mage, he needs training or he'll fuck things up, see v2! I want a mention of Tommy and Teddy being friends and talking every once in a while. I want a mention of Kate: Tommy and Eli talking about her and at first it's a bit awkward but then it's okay and they make fun of her working together with Hawkguy. And then they meet up and Kate finds it weird that they work together so well. I want them to meet other superheroes and demand to be treated as equals and eventually they are. I want them to remember Cassie. I want them to remember Jonas and talk about the decision not to repair him and being unsure if it was the right decision.
ETA: I also want Eli to meet America, and to be absolutely incredulous that the team thought trusting Loki was a good idea.
I don't think I'll ever get something like that in canon, but it would be amazing. For now I can just enjoy imagining it.
