So I started reading "Saga"

Things that led to me not getting enough sleep the past few days and napping/dozing for hours this afternoon:
- the NHL All-Star-Game fantasy draft last night. I didn't plan on staying up, but it was hilarious. Drunk!Ovi! "Phil is one of the most coachable players out there", and the Kessel-Seguin trade, A+ trolling.
- A few days ago, two hours before it closed, I bought some Image comics via HumbleBundle. And because it's not like I don't have enough things I should urgently do or a list of other things I already use for procrastination purposes, the day before yesterday I started reading Saga.
I love it A LOT. SO MUCH. I only just finished this issue, i.e. chapter 18, so NO SPOILERS for anything beyond that please! I thought there were more chapters in this issue, because somehow the number of pages was wrong, so I was very disappointed when I got to the end. I'll have to see how I get my hands on the rest of what's available soon.
Characters:
- Marko and Alana! Such a great couple! Both imperfect but they help each other and they're sweet and tough together and I just really love their relationship. I also like them on their own, Marko the former good soldier and now pacifist and Alana the romantic (but in no way weak) who everyone said was kind of useless. They're clueless but loving and extremely protective parents, it's lovely.
- Marko's parents are so great, how they react to Alana and Hazel and adjust, even though they still retain much of their old mindset, and Barr the not-seamstress and widowed Klara sort-of-flirting with Oswald the cyclops. I also liked Oswald. And then he died, killed accidentally by Gwendolyn, oh no...
- Izabel! A pink floating teenage (?) ghost with no legs and her guts hanging out as Hazel's babysitter, asdsfghjasdf
- A living tree rocket ship!!!
- I'm really glad that we know Hazel is going to survive to at least adulthood. I wonder how far/fast we'll see her grow up.
- Gwendolyn! Wow she's hot. I just really want her to eventually become friends with Alana okay, it'd be so great. But it'd have to be quite a bit in the future... Though she says she's been with people from other races, she hates people from Landfall, calls them animals even. And she almost killed Alana, she went pretty far in her revenge trip for a broken heart. I wonder what made her start hunting him - maybe it was mentioned, I'll have to reread.
- The Will is okay, I like him but he hasn't quite won me over yet. I really like that he has a sister (and that she's also a Freelancer, the Brand, and that she introduced him to the Stalk, and that she would only kill sports writers), I like siblings. The Stalk has a great character design, when I first saw her she reminded me of one of the monsters from "Claymore." And the Lying/Honest Cat is great.
- poor Sophie :( but she and Gwendolyn and Lying/Honest Cat could be good together.
- Also with the robots, nice idea, interesting so far, but not in love with them yet. I wonder what'll happen with them eventually, politically. And what a robot baby looks like. I didn't like him that much, but I hope Prince Robot IV is okay.
- I like the reporters, Upsher and Doff. I'm curious what they end up doing next. ("next" in the story, so quite a few months later.)
World:
- Board games! And equal access issues on planets with winged people and a Freelancer union and people living on a comet and the timesucker baby and spells that need different ingredients, so many nice details.
- All in all the universe sucks, though, war pretty much everywhere. That rodent medic who died was just one good example.
- great diversity, there's LGBTQ representation (Gwendolyn is bi!!, the reporters are a gay couple) and people that look like they correspond to different Earth races, even though race works differently in that 'verse.
- I love how the story deals with sex. It happens, it's natural, it's not glossed over, from crazy porn scenes on Sextillion to Alana asking to suck Marko's cock to avoid an argument. Also bodily fluids exist and things like changing diapers. It makes everything feel more real.
- I really like the art in general. On all pages, but some of the full-page panels (and title pages) are just spectacular.
- And the writing, it can do funny and serious and whimsical and all at the same time. The pacing is also good.
Some of my favorite scenes so far:
- Alana being willing to kill her daughter before letting the Stalk take her (later when the robot is after them she says she could never do that, but I'm pretty sure direct confrontation makes a difference)
- Alana shooting Marko before he can kill the soldiers after them
- Sophie talking with Lying Cat to reassure herself that she did nothing wrong was an amazing scene.
- The reporters talking to Alana's step-mom was fun.
- Gwendolyn and Klara's unlucky meeting again, and Izabel sending the Lying Cat away
and many others.
- I'm not sure how much I like how after Marko pushed Alana off the lighthouse to save her from Gwendolyn, Alana then flew up and knocked Gwendolyn out. Alana asks how he knew she could do that, and I don't think he did, I think he just hoped she could fly enough to survive. If her wings are vestigial it's a bit unlikely that she's suddenly able to fly just because of adrenaline. But visually it was very cool.
To sum up, Saga is fantastic, and I want more.
(Problem: what to do first, find the next Saga chapters or read the other Image comics I got? Probably the latter, because it's easier and I'm lazy. But then!)

Date: 2015-01-24 09:24 pm (UTC)Haven't read Saga, but I've heard such good things! It's on my list, for sure.

Date: 2015-01-24 09:34 pm (UTC)I'm sad Sid and Geno got injured and couldn't make it. #GenoForASGCaptain2016
I'm planning not to watch the skills competition live, because I really need sleep, but I doubt my self-control, so I'll see. Maybe as a reward if I get work done until then.

Date: 2015-01-24 09:44 pm (UTC)Part of me wishes Sid and Geno were there, too! Even though I'd much rather they take the time to get better. I'm still bitter that PK Subban isn't there also, as he seems to be one of the best, most charming people you'd want at an event that is basically a giant marketing stunt.
Good luck with your work this afternoon! I'm not sure I'll watch either, but you never know ... ;)

Date: 2015-01-25 01:01 am (UTC)Yes, having PK there would be so great! What a missed chance.

Date: 2015-01-25 04:31 am (UTC)I am so pleased you're aboard. FYI sagafest on Tumblr is starting tomorrow. Hopefully there will be fanart and stuff posted. :)

Date: 2015-01-25 02:13 pm (UTC)Actually I think I'll have to blacklist Saga on Tumblr, I really hate spoilers and I don't know when I'll get my hands on the next few chapters. (Unless you happen to have links...?)
Edit: ok, I found the digital store. Now to take a look at my finances and then hopefully :)

Date: 2015-01-25 10:25 am (UTC)OH GOD THE RODENT MEDIC. I am still traumatized by that. They hooked me in with three pages and then yanked my heart out! D:

Date: 2015-01-25 02:21 pm (UTC)The rodent medic was a fantastic shorthand for "this whole universe is seriously fucked up." I wonder if/when the comic will get more into the political side of the war, there are already hints of it, like in some of the robot scenes and especially with the reporters.
I think I got the link to HumbleBundle from you, thanks for that! Have you read the other comics yet? Any you can recommend?

Date: 2015-01-25 02:31 pm (UTC)Oh yay, I glad somebody decided to bite on that. It was such a good deal! And no, haven't gotten around to anything else since I can't dl stuff when I'm working. I have read the Alex + Ada one though, and was not impressed in the least. Very lackluster A.I. story. I have been told that Velvet and Fuse were both interesting, so maybe start there? (I doubt anything lives up to Saga *snuggles it*)

Date: 2015-01-25 04:43 pm (UTC)I'm looking forward to trying out more :) Though even if I only like Saga it was more than worth it (and my wallet will be happy with me not picking up too many comics *g*)
