I got two(!!) absolutely fantastic Yuletide fics this year! They both require some level of canon knowledge, so to increase the chances of more people reading them and the authors getting the appreciation they deserve, I'll add a brief overview of the necessary canon knowledge here. (Feedback on if it's enough or not would be helpful.)

Three Times Morgan Acted on His Feelings (And One Time He Didn't) by [archiveofourown.org profile] misura
Fandom: Bloodrights - N. Lee Wood
2.3k, gen, post-canon
Summary: Antonya, Kerrick and Morgan face the big and small challenges of the new future.
Why I love it, short version: The character voices and relationships are perfect and this is exactly what I wanted from post-canon fic for this book.
Necessary basic canon knowledge: Bloodrights )

Innocent by [archiveofourown.org profile] thearrogantemu
Fandom: The Inheritance Trilogy - N. K. Jemisin
7.3k, gen, canon-divergent AU
Summary: Deka fell silent, and I saw him trace the sigil on his forehead with a finger in an almost unconscious gesture.
“That made her angry,” he said after a long moment, “and so… She wanted to hurt me like I’d hurt her. She asked our mother to have my mark filled in before I was sent away. So she would have nothing to fear from me, she said.”
I let out a long sigh. Was this the girl who’d refused to choose between her innocence and her brother’s life? Oh well.
“It was nice while it lasted,” I said aloud.
Why I love it, short version: It's such a cool AU and so well done, and the character voices and relationships and especially complicated family and revenge and loyalty etc. feelings are fantastic.

Hi! Thank you very much for writing a story for me! :D

Things I like:
* I love friendship/team/found family fic. Characters who grow to like each other, trust each other, and eventually would do many things for each other, yes please. Especially when they started out enemies/opponents/are in slightly different positions/places/there are obstacles etc.
* I'm a big fan of loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, and related tropes.
* Canon-divergent AUs and time travel stories are great.
* Hurt/comfort in its many variations is wonderful. The focus can be on either but I like it best if there's a little bit of both.
* Some other things I love: competent characters, plot, happy (or at least optimistic) endings, hugs…

Things I don't like for Yuletide:
* Stories with a very dark or hopeless ending
* Explicit rape or abuse
* Character bashing
* Stories focusing on harlequin romance tropes, or PWP without character development
* Different world AUs, like coffeeshop AUs or Harry Potter fusions. I love the canon worlds of all these fandoms so I'd prefer to read fic taking place there.

Have fun! The prompts below are guidelines, I hope they help you think of ideas.

I have not been very productive in the past few days -.- I did organize a study partner because I know that helps me a lot, but he keeps cancelling on meetings because he's busy studying for other classes so that's not a lot of help either. I'm stressed about this semester because I didn't get a spot in most of the classes I tried to sign up for, so now I have to show up and hope there's a free spot, which takes time and nerves. And the tax law exam is in *looks at calendar* a week, oh shit, that's not good. Aand now I'm even more anxious than before.

At least today I procrastinated by writing fic instead of reading it, that's a marginal improvement? (Okay that's a lie, writing in addition to reading fic.)

On the Day She Dies (Bloodrights – N. Lee Wood)
Gen, 1.6k; Major Character Death
Characters: Kerrick, Morgan
Additional Tags: 5 things, future fic, mercy killing
Summary:
"Swear to me: On the day she dies, you must hunt me down."
"It would be my very great pleasure, sir."
"And mine, Defender."

Five times Kerrick kills Morgan.

The first fic for the fandom! And something I've been thinking about since the first time I read the scene quoted above. The first time I post a fic with major character death, but DD said it's not that sad because the format makes the scenarios look more hypothetical, and not even all of the killings are sad, the last one is even kind of a happy ending.

During work I keep coming up with things I want to post about, and then when I'm home I'm too lazy and/or tired, similarly often on weekends. No vacation for me until September, most likely, but I told myself to pay attention and take a mental health day if I need it. I haven't been sick yet so I wouldn't feel bad about it.

D&D )

I recently found a book again that I'd searched for for years: "Bloodrights" by N. Lee Wood. I was prepared to be disappointed, but to my happy surprise I still like it a lot. It's harsher than I remembered, especially in regards to the cost of striving for power. The surprising reveal at the end made me look at much of it in a different way and made me like it even more. Yay trope subversion. Spoiler )
I liked Antonya and many of the other characters, and rereading the book now there are several scenes that I now much better understand the id buttons they pushed (esp. Kerrick & Morgan.) Also, something I'd forgotten about which was a nice surprise, queer people exist and are, while not completely normal, not a big deal.

Politics, because it's unavoidable: The current situation in Poland is scary, it shows how easily things like that can happen. That the protests appear to have had some success is encouraging but not more than a silver lining.
There are so many countries were democracy is under attack…
In Austria I'm trying to focus on the push-back against the surveillance program, but I'm scared about the new government after the next election. The outcome seems almost certain and it would be a bad one imo, but as we've recently seen in the UK a lot can change during an election campaign, so we'll see.
