Yesterday we had our choir concert! Despite a terrible short-program practice concert on Saturday it went very well. The choir had energy, meaning the rhythm and intonation were good (well, mostly: the better I become, the more I hear that some people in the choir are just bad at intonation) and it reached the audience: we got standing ovations :) Members from out choir did the moderation and it was really funny. Some highlights of our program: Spanische Nächte by our men, Waldemar by our women (first performance of this choir arrangement), a version of "Shall I Compare" by Stefan Kalmer, and all of the other songs, too (like You Are the New Day, Follow the Sun, four songs by Mendelssohn...) And we didn't sing that song I complained about :)

The building we were singing in had a large backroom that we used as cloakroom and that doubles as a gallery. A few paintings hung there, and I saw one and thought "That looks like two Hulks, what a coincidence!" Then I found Batman and Captain America.
A.: Do you recognize them?
Me: Yes *proud of self* Except one, and that's Aquaman.
A.: Huh? No, I meant the classical paintings they are based on...
Clearly different priorities. The show was called "The twilight of the superheroes" by Fernando Reyes (most paintings here). Tbh apart from the "Yay comic superheroes!" I didn't like most of them much. (Especially the description that said Superman having S/M sex with Catwoman(? only described as "sex machine") means he's in trouble, has gone insane and was conquered by higher powers, wtf?)

I have an exam tonight and so many other things to do (I hate June), but if I'm a good little student today I can watch the second half of Doctor Who season 4 tomorrow! Back to studying.

August was awesome. Two weeks holidays in Poland - Krakow, Warsaw and Gdánsk are beautiful, we went sailing (!!) and canoeing (!!!), pirogi taste great and I tried ten different kinds, and it was just all around fun. So many beautiful images! And a surprising amount of storks.
Bonus: I´d bought myself "Good Omens" as a reward for working in July and I must have read it at least three times in two weeks. "On the top of the pile a rather large octopus waved a languid tentacle at them. The sergeant resisted the temptation to wave back." Awww. I love that book so much.

Then one week singing camp, which was wonderful. Choir, and classic ensemble, and dance ensemble, and so many wonderful people being happy and excited together, and the music! So many beautiful songs. We did lots of film music with the full choir: "Circle of Life" from Lion King, the Mission Impossible and the James Bond theme, for example, but also beautiful church music, especially the Mendelssohn. That one and the Schubert psalm 23 in the classic ensemble were my favourites. The concert went well, too. I hope the CD comes earlier than last year! I even got a t-shirt and a button. :-)

I´ll do the Accounting and Management Control II exam again in October. While I´m not studying as much as I planned to, I´m not doing too badly, and I´m quite sure I´ll pass. The key is doing many, many practice questions. And then I can do the more interesting courses! (Well, I still have to do Human Resource Management and Logistics, but I´m ignoring it.) I´ve also finally decided to study Socioeconomics instead of Economics. It covers (more or less) exactly what I wanted to learn when I started studying at the University of Economics and Business in the first place: how our economy and our society work and intersect with each other. Maybe I´ll do the Masters, maybe I´ll study Law later on, but for now I´m very happy with that choice.

I met with friends, I even went out for the first time in months (the clubs were okay, but the grill party was awesome). LB is back from the Math olympiad. I went to a film music concert (dress rehearsal; PotC music!) and tomorrow evening I´ll go to a violin concert. Tomorrow morning I´ll go with a friend to apply for a sports + sauna course, the week after that I´ll audition for a choir and the week after that is Museums´ Night. I´m doing well. :)

PS: I think I´ve figured out crossposting and it looks much easier than I´d thought, yay!

This is why I love church music: it´s beautiful. It can be everything from magnificent (singing a Mass with an orchestra, and yes, I´ve done that!) to meditative (Taizé songs), from challenging (Heinrich Schütz, I´m looking at you) to easy, and it´s beautiful. And occasionally funny.

Today during Special Occasion Church Choir practice we sang a new version of the "Our Father". Eventually the line "deliver us from evil" was the only one we got wrong anymore, so when our conductor asked if we wanted to try it again, someone said: "I want to do the "evil" part again." Someone else: "Yes, let´s do "evil" again." And while my neighbour soprano and I completely lost it, the others continued with "I think "evil" should be longer" and "we just can´t do "evil" right."
I don´t know if I can translate it right, but it´s even funnier in German: "Erlöse uns von dem Bösen" – "das Böse" ("the evil", or maybe ill?) is a noun, and the others came up with lots and lots of variations.("Wir müssen unbedingt nochmal das Böse machen!") And of course once we calmed down the conductor started to laugh. We practiced in the chancel, too – I´m just glad the priest came by earlier.

(We´re singing during the Long Night of the Churches, and you´re all welcome to come, if you happen to be in the neighbourhood!)

Last time I nearly killed my singing teacher. She always tells me to use more energy, more power, and to use my body when singing, and to remind me she threw a ball at me whenever I became too quiet. She also told me to shout at her (for practice). Which made me discover that I sang better when I imagined that I was angry at her. She threw the ball and I didn´t concentrate and threw it back and let´s just say she was lucky I never hit any targets.
But! I´m getting better! Singing is awesome. :D
