Fun post-canon fic with a reunion of my favorites and cool worldbuilding about Champions :D
I've been reading a lot and making notes of stories to rec, but now that I finished my Yuletide fic I suddenly want to write something else again, and maaybe if I try I could finally manage to finish a line for

Dear Yuletide Author
Oct. 31st, 2019 08:10 pmThings I like:
* I love friendship/team/found family fic. Characters who grow to like each other, trust each other, and eventually would do many things for each other, yes please. Especially when they started out enemies/opponents/are in slightly different positions/places/there are obstacles etc.
* I'm a big fan of loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, and related tropes.
* Canon-divergent AUs and time travel stories are great.
* Hurt/comfort in its many variations is wonderful. The focus can be on either but I like it best if there's a little bit of both.
* Some other things I love: competent characters, plot, happy (or at least optimistic) endings, hugs…
Things I don't like for Yuletide:
* Stories with a very dark or hopeless ending
* Explicit rape or abuse
* Character bashing
* Stories focusing on harlequin romance tropes, or PWP without character development
* Different world AUs, like coffeeshop AUs or Harry Potter fusions. I love the canon worlds of all these fandoms so I'd prefer to read fic taking place there.
Have fun! The prompts below are guidelines, I hope they help you think of ideas.

Yuletide recs part II
Feb. 13th, 2019 02:53 pmSix more recs from Yuletide 2018 – better late than never.
The Realms of the Immortals by nirejseki (Tortall, Immortals Quartet)
57k, Rikash/Daine
Summary: Rikash knew he was signing up for a lot when he became Lord of the Stone Tree Stormwing nation.
But joining forces with the extremely dangerous, mysterious, and oddly intriguing Veralidaine Sarrasri, the famous Stormwing Killer, on a road trip through the Divine Realms to assassinate those immortals stupid enough to risk the destruction of the world by working with Chaos?
That's - unexpected.
Why I love it: I do this rarely, but when I finished reading this fic I immediately read it again and then had to leave a comment on every chapter pointing out my favorite parts because there were so many. The characters and their relationships are fantastic, the plot and adventure and action are great, and it's frequently hilarious. It's been a while since I read the books so I'm not completely sure how much of the worldbuilding is original, but the Stormwing culture etc. are also very well done.
Canon knowledge required: probably yes

Yuletide fic: To You
Jan. 1st, 2019 02:19 pmTo You
Fandom: To Whatever – Shaenon Garrity
2k, Ethan/Whatever Lives in the Walls, monologue
Additional tags: canon-typical eldritch abominations, interspecies relationship
Summary: You really could have told me that the runes on the window need to be aligned to the phases of the purple moon for you to actually hear me.
Ethan and his roommate grow even closer.
I really enjoyed writing this, and it was probably the most relaxed I've ever been about writing an exchange story because I knew I wanted to write flirting/a romance in monologue/one-sided dialogue format from the beginning. (Except near the end, when I suddenly became anxious about writing romance. How do.) The source canon even had an audio version, that was very helpful.
I also wrote The Tower With the Orbs, a drabble for the same fandom but more in the horror direction (Summary: Of course Ethan meant to let Willem go. Eventually.) I posted it anonymously a few days earlier instead of in Madness so that the fandom would get wrangled sooner, in hindsight not sure if that was necessary but whatever.
I still have so many more Yuletide fics to read! …aand other things I should be doing. Fingers crossed I'll find time for both. The last year ended and the new year began with lots of good food and several hours of boardgames yesterday, clearly that was a sign of good things to come.

Dec. 29th, 2018 10:01 pmSo much good food
Dec. 26th, 2018 12:35 amOn Saturday I went to two beautiful Christmas markets with my flatmate and her mom – no snow since it had 12° all weekend but I did see a rainbow – and bought myself a plush squirrel that was too fluffy to resist. Then half of our D&D group played a Christmas one-shot that featured zombie suicide pigeons, a reindeer with a breath weapon, and a +2 Good frying pan. We also took out the bad guy's minions with blankets. I played a swordfighter, which was slightly frustrating occasionally because it's way less versatile than playing a spellcaster but by the end (almost 3am) I appreciated the advantages too.
On Sunday I went to three more Christmas markets and then went to a birthday party where we had a lot of fun playing board games. MSZ, who is a very good cook, decided that she wanted to make authentic Ramen so she and LK spent half the day preparing the broth and porkbelly and eggs and so much other stuff there was barely space left on the table, and it was delicious. I ate so much.
On Monday I spent slightly more time than planned reading fic, and In the afternoon I made a 30-seconds-video for the retirement party of my favorite teacher in high school: it was quite difficult to put into words just how much I admire and respect her and how much she meant to me, but I tried.
In the evening I celebrated Christmas with my parents, which means good food and a lot of singing. I got (among some other things) a puzzle, I haven't solved a puzzle in years and I look forward to it.
On Tuesday, more good food, and Yuletide! I requested "Elemental Logic" for three years and this year I got an amazing fic for it. It's so good, it's such a great Medric character study and has such good Medric/Emil and so much wonderful family feelings :)
Oh Good, He's Nineteen (7304 words) by
Fandom: Elemental Logic - Laurie J. Marks
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Medric/Emil, Zanja/Karis, J'han/Norina
Characters: Medric, Emil, Zanja, Karis, J'han, Norina, Leeba
Additional Tags: Found Family, parenting, Introspection
Summary: It's winter in Shaftal, and Medric and Emil's pleasant getaway is disturbed by the arrival of their.. family? Perhaps?
Medric thinks of his affair with Emil as an Autumn Romance, two soldiers broken by war finding comfort in each other's arms. The arrival of their - husband and wives? - forces him to come to terms with whether he is a soldier, just who Leeba is to him, and how it can be possible that he is, in fact, nineteen.
Canon Knowledge Required: probably yes
My recipient liked their story as well, so all is good.
Tomorrow we're meeting with family friends for more good food, and I also have plans for the rest of December that I'm looking forward to (apart from the studying, and the cleaning, etc. etc.) Maybe we will even get a few snowflakes again, who knows.

2017, day 1
Jan. 1st, 2017 07:56 pmI celebrated New Year's Eve with Lio&Maria and Lisa&Nati, and Maria tried out about ten or so different cocktails, yum. Three other people showed up for a while and drew Lio into a discussion on politics, and I hated that on the last day of 2016 while I wanted to play a game and enjoy myself I couldn't help but hear someone argue on the other side of the room that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were equally bad options. Bleh. Fortunately they left before midnight. We sang a bit (including to Level Up and This Year), and after midnight we played four rounds of cards and I won all of them :) I came home so late that I narrowly missed OT of the Pens-Habs game, but the Pens won so that was good too.
I wrote two stories for Yuletide this year:

Fandom: Gladiator – Dami Im

My assignment. It was pretty frustrating because the prompts were good and I had ideas, but it was hard to put them together into a story, and at some point I planned something much longer and more complex before I condensed it to its current length. It probably made the story better, but there were a few elements I'm sorry I lost.

Day 1: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Huh. I think I'll cheat a bit and refer to "Step Forward" above, because I really like the concept of this AU and I feel like I wrote a good look into it.
Dark Blue Skies, a Steerswoman fic: "In the third year of Willam's apprenticeship with Corvus, Abremio came to Wulfshaven." It's one of my longer works and I'm quite proud of how it turned out.
Assuming Shape, a Young Avengers fic, Teddy Altman's mom's backstory. (I can't remember if her name is from canon somewhere or if I took it from another fic.) I wrote it because I wanted to make her more real (which makes canon even sadder) and I feel like I succeeded.
I'm invited to his birthday party even though I know very few people who will be there. Half of his friends are mathematicians and half of them are musicians. So when he decided he wanted to do a quiz, he made up questions that are half math/half music knowledge, some of them I don't even understand. I'm curious to see how that will go ^^
I got my Yuletide assignment! It's a prompt I'd been thinking of writing a treat for anyway :) Not that I ever managed to write a treat before. This year there are a few letters I like, so maybe I'll manage at least one or two?
For my assignment I already have a (very rough) outline. Though now that I think about it, it maybe kiiiinda skirts close to one of their DNWs. (A matter of definition, really.) I'll have to revise it a bit.
Sidney Crosby has another concussion -.- Sucks. Hopefully it's not severe.
The season hasn't even started yet and I already am reminded why I watch less TV in winter: just keeping up with hockey news takes a lot of time. It's fun too though. Pens season opener on Thursday, middle of the night but I'll stay up for that one. Pens-Caps is always great :) (though it would be more fun if Sid were playing...)

Steerswoman series, post-canon epistolary
I love this fic a lot, instant new headcanon. The relationship between Willam and Rowan and Bel is great and so warm, I just want to hug the story and the characters too.
Some people liked the stories I wrote, so I'm happy :)
I spent Christmas with my family, it was nice. I even went to evening mass, which I originally didn't intend, but mom said she'd really like it if I came to listen to her and LB and also she needed someone to turn the pages for her on the organ. (The sermon was okay, but the mass as a whole emphasized that church is currently not for me. I am proud of the parish for taking in a refugee family.)
Among other things I got a cupcake recipe book from my parents, I'm looking forward to baking a lot! LB said he thought about what I might need now that I live in my own flat and got me a "Minions" DVD xD He's the best.

People are already publishing their Yuletide letters and I enjoy reading them. I know which fandoms I'm going to request, I'm not sure yet about all that I'm going to offer. No Hockey RPF this year because I want to try something different, and I'm contemplating a few fandoms that would be a bit of a challenge but could be interesting.
Pens vs. Leafs tonight! I'm definitely not staying up to watch it. What little self-control I have should at least be sufficient for that. I need sleep. Tomorrow I'll go with friends to an all-you-can-eat jazz brunch, it would be a shame if I fell asleep in the middle.
My mom finally started listening to "Hamilton", and I got LB interested too. I started reading the biography by Chernow, so far it is very interesting.

And for the less entertaining parts of life, I need to figure out how to get back to working on my thesis. I haven't done much the past few weeks and it's past time.
("figure out how to" instead of just "get back to" because I'm back at that stage where it feels like it just... doesn't work. >.< "I just have to do it" is so easy to say and so hard to, well, do.)
Leise rieselt der Schnee
Dec. 31st, 2014 01:51 pmThen we got stuck because there was too much snow on the road upward. Fortunately we could roll down to a petrol station not too far away and they lent us a hydraulic car jack so we could better put on the snow chains that we fortunately brought with us, even though we were sure we weren't going to need them.
Today in the morning my dad decided to show me how to do it (one of the chains had become loose) with the mechanic car jack from our trunk. I was only wearing my pyjamas for breakfast, but I just put on a thick sweater and ski pants (English word?) because I thought it'd just be ten minutes in front of the house. Only then he remembered we still had to go shopping, and I'd wanted to try driving in the snow anyway, right? There's no shop in the small village here, you have to drive three villages further.
So I drove with snow chains for the first time and at first it was fine. Only later the road was already cleared of snow, which made driving with chains more difficult. After one turn I started to spin and ended up with the car turned about 100 degrees to the right in the middle of the road (and another car closely behind, fortunately in sufficient distance.) Not a lot of fun, but the most important part was not panicking. The car safety training I recently did probably came in useful.
Everything is white outside! Almost incredible, after how green it was at Christmas. It's still snowing, and right now there's even a little bit of sun behind very thin clouds. Yesterday we went for a long walk with the dogs, and Pierre (I think) already built two snowmen in the garden.
( Pictures (sadly not very good quality) )
Pierre is a very good cook and dinner tonight will be delicious. LB is coming in a few hours and a few other people too. I hope we'll be able to see the fireworks well.
